“  Ted was a tremendous competitor in a quiet sense.  He always brought a positive perspective to what we were trying to do.”

- Mark Hilton ’84

Ted Shipley ’86 graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education from Lyndon State College in 1986 and an A.S. in Business Administration in 1987.  After graduation he taught physical education and coached at the Waynflete School in Portland, Maine for eight years until he moved on to work at Vermont Technical College.  He is currently employed by Castleton State College as assistant athletic director, men’s baseball coach, and men’s basketball coach.

Ted competed in cross country, Nordic, and baseball throughout his four years at Lyndon State.  He was recognized many times as an outstanding student athlete in all three sports, to include Athlete of the Year at LSC as a junior; MVP for Nordic; MVP for cross country; and 1st team All Conference for baseball.   Ted actually played every inning of every LSC baseball game for four years!  His leadership and drive were recognized when he was chosen to serve as captain in all three sports.

Ted feels that he has been more successful in coaching that he was as a player.  His coaching career now spans twenty years.  Ted began as a high school coach and later went to Vermont Technical College to coach both the men’s baseball and basketball teams.

With a string of Conference Championships under his belt at VTC and noteworthy records in both basketball (.52) and baseball (.807), Ted moved on to his current coaching positions at Castleton State.  At Castleton State, Ted has posted impressive stats in both sports.  His basketball team made it to the NCAA national tournament, the first in Castleton history since the college started competing exclusively at the NCAA Division III level.  In 2007, Ted’s baseball team set the school record for the most wins (26) in a season.

Ted and his players have been consistently recognized for their sportsmanship and last year, Ted implemented a civic component to his coaching.  He requests that all of his players volunteer with the youth, elderly, or disabled.

Ted has been named “Coach of the Year” on several occasions, to include 2002 & 2004 Vermont College Baseball Coach of the Year, 2003-2004 North Atlantic Conference Basketball Coach of the Year, and 2007 North Atlantic Conference Baseball Coach of the Year.  He has been the humble recipient of many other accolades, so much so that he confesses to not keeping track.

Ted lives in Bomoseen with his wife, Michelle, and his daughter, Olivia.
