"Jackie is one of those rare individuals that you come across once in a teaching and coaching career, one graced with natural athletic ability as well as great people skills, enabling her to demonstrate the essential qualities of a good leader and a compassionate human being."Â -Â Rosa Tirado
Jacalyn Priestley-Smith '76 graduated from Lyndon with a degree in education. She went on to earn a master's degree in early childhood education and another in school counseling. As a student, Jackie was a three-sport athlete. She played basketball, softball, and soccer between 1973 and 1976. She was a co-captain of all three teams during her collegiate athletic career and served as co-president of both the Women's Recreation Association and Physical Education Club.Â
Former teammate, Joyce Siok '79 recalls, "Jackie was a true team player who could, and did, play a variety of roles and positions for her teams. In basketball, she was adept in all facets of the game and her athletic abilities were such that she could play any position in softball… Her versatility was an asset."
Jackie was instrumental in taking the soccer program from club to varsity status during her time at Lyndon. Former teammates feel that her efforts at promoting and supporting women athletes helped to form the foundation for future success in women's athletics at Lyndon.Â
Prior to retiring from teaching after 25 years with the Long Beach Catholic School, Jackie was recognized with the "Distinguished Teacher-of-the-Year" award for her lifetime achievement in the field of education.Â
In 2006, Jackie returned to the Long Beach Catholic School as the school counselor. In this role, Jackie visits classrooms to teach a variety of "guidance" lessons on growing up mentally fit. Jackie is also the creator and coordinator of Lilypads, a support group for children dealing with the pain of loss.
Jackie has made her own personal health a priority all along. She has been a runner for over 30 years, having participated in six marathons. Each day she runs three to five miles to maintain her athleticism.
Jackie resides in Wantagh, N.Y., with her life partner, Michelle, and their two King Charles Spaniels, Lucy and Linus.
