Hornet baseball splits a pair at Lesley

Boston, MA - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team rode a strong pitching performance from Matt Page (Groton, VT) and Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) to victory in the opener of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader at Lesley University.  After the 3-1 Hornet win, the hosts bounced back to take the nightcap, 11-4.  The split leaves Lyndon at 3-14 on the season, while Lesley sits at 10-14 overall.

Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 3, Lesley 1

Lyndon took the early lead in the top of the first inning.  John Mahoney (Navarre, FL) reached on catcher's interference leading off.  He then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring when Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) grounded out.

The Hornets hung on to the 1-0 lead until the home half of the fifth inning.  Adam Budorick singled to lead things off for the Lynx.  Then with one out, Colin McCarthy doubled to right field, scoring Budorick to tie the game.

Lyndon regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning.  Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT) singled with one out.  He moved to second on Jordan Cane's (Merrimac, MA) ground out, then to third on a wild pitch.  Wilson then scored when Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) reached on an error.

The Hornets added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.  Mahoney led off with a base hit, then stole both second and third.  He came in to score on Bushey, RBI single.

Page picked up the win with one of his best starts as a Hornet.  He went five strong innings, allowing only one run and three hits while striking out three.  Ostermann came on in relief to throw two scoreless innings and pick up the save.  Lesley's Patrick Teasdale took the loss despite not allowing an earned run and striking out ten over six innings.

Game 2 - Lesley 11, NVU-Lyndon 4

The Lynx took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Andrew Gryniewicz drew a leadoff walk and later came in to score on Ian Dempsey's base hit.  Lyndon promptly tied things in the top of the third when TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) drew a two-out walk and came in to score when Bushey reached on an error.

Lesley broke the game open with eight runs in their half of the fourth inning.  Justin Dennett's two-out, two-run base hit was the big hit of the frame.  The Lynx also benefitted from a pair of Hornet errors and four walks, as seven of the eight Lesley runs were unearned.

Trailing 9-1, Lyndon got closer with three runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Alberto Bustamante (Los Angeles, CA) started the rally with a one-out base hit.  Mahoney followed with another base hit, and Santaw reached on an error, scoring Bustamante.  Mahoney came in to score when Bushey grounded out, then Santaw crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Lesley added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the final score.

Jacob Nemergut picked up the complete game vistory for Lesley, allowing no earned runs and four hits and striking out two.  Mahoney started for Lyndon and took the loss.

The Hornets will play at home fir the first time on Tuesday when they host Norwich University.  First pitch at the Skip Pound Baseball Complex is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
