Hornet baseball loses a pair of heartbreakers at Thomas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Waterville, ME - Thomas College won both ends of Sunday's North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader with Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in walk-off fashion, taking three of four games in the weekend series.  Thomas improves to 13-22 on the season and 8-6 in NAC play, while Lyndon falls to 8-22 overall and 4-6 in conference.

Game 1 - Thomas 4, NVU-Lyndon 3 (9 innings)

Thomas jumped out to the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.  The Terriers loaded the bases with one out, then Matt Seymour doubled off of Lyndon starter Jacob Wechselblatt (Reston, VA), driving in a pair of runs.  Thomas pushed across another run on Kyle Gleason's ground out.

Lyndon finally broke through against Thomas starter Tony Meza when Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT) homered leading off the top of the fifth inning.  The Hornets tied things an inning later.  John Mahoney (Navarre, FL) singled leading off.  After TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) grounded into a fielder's choice, Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) doubled, putting runners at second and third.  Two batters later, Tyler Murro (Littleton, NH) doubled, scoring both runners to tie the game.

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the ninth inning.  With one out, Cameron Brooks was hit by a pitch, then lifted for pinch runner Jackson Ladd.  A base hit from Lucas Harmon moved Ladd into scoring position, then Seymour's two-out base hit drove in Jackson Ladd with the winning run.

Meza went eight innings for Thomas, yielding three runs on seven hits and striking out four.  Jake Lacroix came on to pitch a scoreless ninth and pick up the win.  Wechselblatt went the distance for the Hornets and took the loss.  He allowed eight hits while striking out four and walking two.

Game 2 - Thomas 9, NVU-Lyndon 8

The Hornets wasted no time getting on the board in the nightcap.  Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) singled with one out, then Bushey was hit by a pitch.  After both advanced on a passed ball, Wilson delivered a two-out, two-run base hit.

Thomas got one run back in the bottom of the first.  With two out, the Terriers strung together three straight singles, with Devin Grindle singling home Meza.

Lyndon got the run back in the top of the second inning.  With two outs, Santaw walked and stole second.  He came around to score on Thornton's double.  In the bottom of the second, Thomas used some aggressive base running and a Hornet miscue to manufacture two runs, one unearned, and tie the game at 3-3.

Thomas cut the lead back to one run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Harmon led off with a base hit, then scored on Gleason's double.

The Hornets extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning.  Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) singled with one out.  After Santaw drew a walk, Thornton singled, scoring Roberge.  Bushey followed with a base hit to left field, driving in Santaw and giving the Hornets a 7-4 advantage.

Thomas scored once in the home fifth, then took the lead after putting three more runs on the board in the home sixth.  Meza led off the sixth with a walk.  After a fielder's choice, back to back doubles from Grindle and Jarrad Willette and a base hit from Brad Smith gave the Terriers an 8-7 lead.

With Lyndon trailing by a run, pinch hitter Jordan Cane (Merrimac, MA) walked to lead off the seventh inning.  After Santaw reached on a fielder's choice and Thornton delivered his fourth hit of the game, Bushey singled to left field, driving in Santaw with the tying run.  The Hornets proceeded to load the bases with two outs but were unable to push across the go ahead run.

Seymour singled to start the home seventh.  After Gleason bunted him to second, Meza was intentionally walked.  DJ Cagnina then reached on what would be a costly error, loading the bases.  Grindle then produced a base hit to right, scoring Seymour and giving the Terriers their second walk-off win of the day.

Andrew Pruell, the sixth Thomas pitcher of the game, got the win.  Dylan Crump (Falls Village, CT), the sixth Hornet pitcher, took the loss.

The Hornets return home for a non-conference doubleheader against Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday afternoon.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
