Hornet baseball splits NAC twin bill at Thomas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Waterville, ME - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon went extra innings to defeat Thomas College in the opener of this afternoon's North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader.  The host Terriers rebounded for the no-hit shutout win in the nightcap.  The split leaves the Hornets with an 8-20 overall record and a 4-4 mark in NAC play.  The Terriers are 11-22 on the season and 6-6 in conference.

Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 5, Thomas 4 (12 innings)

TJ Santaw's (Newport, VT) solo home run leading off the seventh inning tied the game at 4-4, then a Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT) sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th inning scored Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) with the winning run.  Bushey also had a two-run home run and an RBKI double in the game while Santaw scored three of the five Hornet runs.

Dylan Grindle's two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning had given Thomas a 4-3 lead.  Grindle drove in three of the four Thomas runs.  DJ Cagnina was three for five at the plate, with a double and a run batted in.

Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) pitched four innings of no-hit relief, facing the minimum 12 batters and striking out five, to pick up the victory.  Hornet starter Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) allowed three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Jacob Wechselblatt (Reston, VA) relieved Rodriguez in the seventh inning and pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to Ostermann.  Wyatt Thompson, the fourth Thomas pitcher of the game, took the loss.

Game 2 - Thomas 2, NVU-Lyndon 0

Thomas pitcher Garrison Paillet was the story of the nightcap.  He didn't allow a hit in the complete game shutout.  The only Hornet base runners were Wilson and Jordan Cane (Merrimac, MA), who drew walks in the second and fifth innings respectively, and Bushey, who was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning.

Cagnina delivered RBI base hits in the first and third innings to give Thomas all of the runs that they would need.  Austin Stebbins scored both Terrier runs after reaching on an error to lead off the game and singling to lead off the third inning.

Hornet starter Matt Page (Groton, VT) was stellar in defeat.  He allowed only three hits over six innings and struck out six batters without yielding a walk.

The Hornets and Terriers will complete the four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday.  First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
