Box Score 2 Farmington, ME - Less than 24 hours after scoring a program record 23 runs against the University of Maine at Farmington, the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team couldn't get anything going at the plate, as the Owls swept Monday's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. The Beavers didn't allow an earned run the day in improving to 6-17 on the season and 4-4 in NAC play. Lyndon falls to 7-18 overall and 3-3 in conference.
Game 1 - UMaine-Farmington 3, NVU-Lyndon 2
UMF was able to break through against Hornet starter Jacob Wechselblatt (Reston, VA) in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Lambert got things started with a one-out base hit, then Will Cauchon drew what would be the only walk issued by Wechselblatt all afternoon. Tyler Johnson followed with an RBI single, scoring Lambert and giving the Beavers the lead. Sam Peterson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then with two outs, Hunter LaBossiere delivered a two-run base hit to left field, making it 3-0, UMF.
Wechselblatt would settle in and allow only one hit the rest of the game. However UMF starter Riley Bartell was also busy keeping the Hornets at bay. Lyndon only managed three hits over the first four innings.
The Hornets were finally able to break through in the top of the fifth inning. Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT) reached on an error leading off the inning. He advanced to third on Tyler Murro's (Littleton, NH) ground out, and scored Lyndon's first run on a sacrifice fly from Carlos Batista (Davenport, FL).
Lyndon got within one run in the top of the sixth inning. TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) singled leading off, then stole second. He advanced to third when Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) flied out to center field, then scored on a Beaver error on the play.
The Hornets got the tying run on in the top of the seventh inning when Murro singled with one out. Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) pinch ran for Murro, but was cut down trying to steal second base. Bartell then struck out pinch hitter EJ Camden (Corona, CA) to end the ball game.
Bartell got the complete game victory, allowing no earned runs on six hits while striking out seven without issuing a walk. Wechselblatt suffered the loss despite only yielding four hits and striking out a pair.
Game 2 - UMaine-Farmington 2, NVU-Lyndon 0
The series finale unfolded as a pitchers' duel between Ostermann and UMF's Aaron Goschke. The Beavers struck first in the bottom of the first inning. LaBossier led off with a single. After Danny Terhune bunted LaBossier to second, Bartell walked and Ryan Sargent singled to load the bases. A sacrifice fly from Lambert drove in LaBossier, but Ostermann was able to get out of the inning without further damage.
Ostermann and Goschke blanked both offenses in the middle innings. Lyndon did mount a threat in the top of the fifth when Murro walked leading off, then Alberto Bustamante singled with one out. Murro moved to third with the tying run when John Mahoney (Navarre, FL) flied out, but he was stranded there when Goschke got Santaw to fly out.
The Beavers manufactured a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jonny Pruett singled leading off, then moved to third on LaBossier's base hit to right field. With one out, LaBossier grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Pruett.
Bushey led off the Hornet sixth with a base hit. Then with one out, he stole second. However, he was thrown out at third on Jordan Cane's (Merrimac, MA) line out to end the inning. Goschke then retired the Hornets in order in teh seventh inning to close out the game.
Goschke scattered five hits in the complete game victory, striking out four while walking a pair. Ostermann took the loss while going the distance for the Hornets. He gave up seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Hornets are scheduled to return to the Skip Pound Baseball Complex on Wednesday for a non-conference game against Fisher College.
