Box Score 2 Buzzards Bay, MA - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team couldn't get anything going on Sunday afternoon, as Massachusetts Maritime Academy cruised to a doubleheader sweep of the Hornets. The Buccaneers took the opener, 5-1, then completed the sweep with a 17-0 shutout in the nightcap. Mass Maritime improves to 4-5 on the season, while Lyndon falls to 2-11.
Game 1 - Mass Maritime 5, NVU-Lyndon 1
Matt Doherty's (Gardner, MA) RBI single scored Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Mass Maritime took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, and went on to take the win.
Zach Sylvia had two hits, two runs scored, and a run batted in for Mas Maritime. AJ Pietrafesa had two hits, two RBIs and a run scored, and Alex Schlapak also notched a pair of hits. Doherty, EJ Camden (Corona, CA) and Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) had the only hits for the Hornets.
Brodey Tinkham went the distance, striking out 11 without yielding a walk, to pick up the win. Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) started for Lyndon and gave up five runs with two strikeouts over five innings of work. Alberto Bustamante (Los Angeles, CA) came on to throw a scoreless inning of relief for Lyndon.
Game 2 - Mass Maritime 17, NVU-Lyndon 0
Mass Maritime scored three times in the bottom of the first inning to grab th early lead, then broke the game wide open with a 12-run fifth inning. The Buccaneers pounded out 17 hits, with John Tropea and Frank Allen leading the way with two hits, three RBSs, and two runs scored apiece. Tucker Leslie added a two-run home run and A.J. Luciano and Hunter Dean added two hits each.
John Mahoney (Navarre, FL), Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT), and Doherty had the only hits for Lyndon. Mahoney was the only Hornet base runner to reach third base.
Sam Huffman scattered three hits and struck out seven with only one walk in throwing the complete game shutout. Matt Page (Groton, VT) started and took the loss for the Hornets, who used five different pitchers in the game.
Lyndon returns to the diamond on Friday when they travel to Fisher College for another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
