Box Score 2 Boston, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston swept both ends of a non-conference college baseball doubleheader from Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Friday evening. The Beacons took the opener, 15-3, and the nightcap, 13-2. UMass Boston improves to 4-0 on the season, while Lyndon falls to 2-9.
Game 1 - UMass Boston 15, NVU-Lyndon 3
The Hornets got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning. Parker Perron (Barton, VT) led off the inning with a base hit. Then, with two outs, Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) singled back up the middle. Jordan Cane (Merrimac, MA) followed with an RBI single to give Lyndon the lead.
UMass Boston answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. After Jake Woltman drew a walk, Steve Brookwell followed with a two-out single. Thomas Cue then delivered a triple off the center field wall, scoring both runners and giving the Beacons the lead. Drew Metzdorf doubled home Cue to make it 3-1.
Aidan Blake led off the UMass Boston fourth with a bloop double. He moved to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch, extending the UMass Boston lead to 4-1.
UMass Boston broke the game wide open with an 11 run, 9 hit sixth inning. Ethan Errara's two-run home run, Blake's RBI double, and Kevin Carrera's bases loaded double were the big blows of the frame.
The Hornets did manage to push across two runs in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Luis Rivera Pellot (Wimauma, FL) walked, Bushey singled, and Cane walked to load the bases. Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) then walked to force in a run and Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT) singled home another.
Cole Porter, the second of three UMass Boston pitchers, picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings of relief. Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) starter for Lyndon and took the loss.
Game 2 - UMass Boston 13, NVU-Lyndon 2
The Hornets again took the early lead in teh nightcap. Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) reached on an error leading off. After John Mahoney (Navarre, FL) reached on a fielder's choice, Bushey blasted a two run home run over the left field wall to put the Hornets in front.
UMass Boston got their bats going in the bottom of the second inning. Craig Corliss led off with a double, then Blake walked. Later in the inning, Nick Palma reached on an error, allowing two runs to score. Palmer later came home on Errara's ground out, and Brookwell singled home another run, making the score 4-2, Beacons.
The Beacons got some breathing room in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gianni Zarrilli, Jr. homered leading off the inning. After Henry Score was hit by a pitch, Brookwell's two-out triple drove in Score and Cue's base hit brought home Brookwell, extending the UMass Boston advantage to 7-2.
UMass Boston added two insurance runs in the fifth inning on Errara's bases loaded double. Then the Beacons closed out the scoring with four more runs in the their half of the sixth inning.
Jackson Snider started and picked up the win for UMass Boston. He gave up two runs and three hits in four innings of work. Aidan McMillan, Ross Dexter, and Josh Eastman each threw a scoreless inning of relief. Hornet starter Jacob Wechselblatt (Reston, VA) allowed nine runs, seven earned, with eight strikeouts over five innings and took the loss.
Lyndon returns to action next Saturday, March 19th, when they travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy for another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
