Box Score 2 Auburndale, FL - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth inning to edge Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and complete a sweep of the Hornets in Sunday's college baseball doubleheader. The Engineers prevailed, 12-11, after downing the Hornets 14-1 in the opener. The games were the first of the season for Rose-Hulman, while Lyndon remains winless in seven starts.
Game 1 - Rose-Hulman 14, NVU-Lyndon 1
The Engineers plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning and scored in five of six innings. Josh Mesenbrink was two for two with a home run and four runs batted in to lead Rose-Hulman. Adam Taylor and Coulter Couillard-Rodak also had two hits, as the Engineers pounded out 14 hits in total.
Lyndon got their sole run in the top half of the third inning when Jordan Cane (Merrimac, MA) drove in EJ Camden (Corona, CA). Cane, Dylan Wilson (Monroe, CT), and Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) had two hits apiece for the Hornets.
Rose-Hulman starter Ian Kline went 4.2 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. Hornet starter John Mahoney (Navarre, FL) took the loss.
Game 2 - Rose-Hulman 12, NVU-Lyndon 11
The Hornets rallied from a 9-3 deficit to take an 11-9 lead, only to have the Engineers push across two late runs to escape with the win. With the Hornets still leading, 11-10, Rose-Hulman's Brett Tuttle hit a two-run home run to give the Engineers the lead and eventually the win. Tuttle also tripled and doubled, just missing out on hitting for the cycle. Taylor also had a big game at the plate with two hits and three runs batted in.
Skyler Bushey (St. Albans, VT) was three for five with a pair of doubles to pace the Hornets. Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) drove in two runs.
Jonathan Oliger, the fourth Rose-Hulman pitcher, picked up the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Schuyler Wilcox came on for the last 1.1 innings to pick up the save. Lyndon reliever Jacob Wechselblatt was tagged with the loss.
The Hornets will wrap up play in the RussMatt Invitational on Monday when they play a doubleheader against Finlandia University. First pitch on NorthEast Regional Park Field #3 is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
