Box Score 2 Presque Isle, ME - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team battered University of Maine at Presque Isle pitchers for 38 runs and 35 hits on the way to a sweep of Saturday's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. The Hornets, winners of seven games in a row, improve to 7-8 on the season. Lyndon also improves to 7-5 in NAC play and pulls into a second place tie with Thomas College in the East Division. UMaine-Presque Isle remains winless in 12 games, including 11 conference contests.
Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 19, UMaine-Presque Isle 3
The Hornets pounded 14 hits and scored in every inning except the first. Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) led the attack with a home run, three runs batted in, and three runs scored. He reached base safely five times in six plate appearances. TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) also had a big game with three hits including a double, three RBIs, and foru runs scored. Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) also homered and drove in three runs on three hits and Codi Smith (Hartford, VT) added two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. William Stinson had a pair of doubles for the Owls.
Cooper Whitehouse (South Berwick, ME) allowed one run and three hits, striking out seven in four innings to earn the win. Owl starter Kaiden Crowley took the loss.
Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 19, UMaine-Presque Isle 15
The hits kept coming for Lyndon in the nightcap. The Hornets plated runs in each of the first six innings, delivering 21 hits including 10 extra base hits. Jordan Cane (Merrimac, MA) and Steven Friscia (Smithtown, NY) both had huge games at the plate. Cane was a perfect four for four with a home run, four runs batted in, and three runs scored. Friscia was also a perfect four for four, including three doubles. He also drove in three runs and scored twice. Smith had three hits, including a triple, and scored four times. Santaw had a pair of doubles in his three hits, and crossed home three times. Sean Cavanaugh (Londonderry, NH) also joined the hit parade with three base hits.
The Hornets built an 18-3 lead in the game, then withstood a furious comeback by the Owls. UMPI sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in their half of the fifth inning to make things interesting. Joey Lippo was the hitting star for the Owls with three hits, three RBI, and three runs scored.
Dylan Crump (Falls Village, CT) started for Lyndon. He went 4.1 innings and picked up the win. Keith Herman (Barton, VT) relieved Crump, then Cavanaugh came in and retired four straight Owl hitters to close out the game. Outler started and took the loss for UMPI.
The Hornets and Owls will play another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 noon.
