Hornets drop NAC opener to Husson

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team took to the field for the first time in over three weeks and the first time at home on Thursday afternoon.  The Hornets hosted Husson University in their first North Atlantic Conference contest of the season.  The visiting Eagles pounded out 10 hits on the way to an 11-0 victory.  Husson improved to 6-4 on the season and 6-0 in NAC play while Lyndon fell to 0-4 on the season.

The game started out as a pitcher's duel in the early innings.  Over the first three frames Husson's only baserunner off of Hornet starter Sean Cavanaugh (Londonderry, NH) reached as a result of an error.  Meanwhile Eagle starter Chris Naylor retired the first nine Hornets in order.

Husson got on the board in the top of the fourth inning.  David LeBlanc doubled off of Hornet reliever TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) for the Eagles' first hit.  Chris Ewanik then homered over the center field wall to put the visitors in front.  Husson then loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, then Austin Baron drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run.  The Eagles scored two more unearned runs following a Hornet error to extend their lead to 5-0.

Codi Smith (Hartford, VT) got the Hornets on the board with a two-out solo home run to center in the bottom half of the fourth.  That would prove to be the only run that the Hornets would score, as Naylor and four Husson relievers kept the Hornets off the scoreboard the rest of the game, allowing only a fifth inning infield single to Santaw.

The Eagles added to their lead when Jackson Curtis homered with a man on in the top of the fifth inning.  Husson scored four more runs in the top of the ninth inning to account for the final score.

Naylor went five innings and earned the win.  Santaw, the second of seven Hornet pitchers, took the loss.  Brandon Smith had a big day at the plate for Husson, as he delivered three hits and scored three runs.

The same two teams will continue their five-game series at Husson this weekend.  Doubleheaders are slated for both Saturday and Sunday.  First pitch is set for 12:00 noon each day, weather permitting.
