Box Score 2 Lynn, MA - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon came up on the short end of the score in both ends of Wedesday's non-conference baseball doubleheader at Fisher College. The host Falcons prevailed 8-4 in the opener and pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Fisher improves to 17-3 on the season. The Hornets, playing for only the second time, fall to 0-3.
Game 1 - Fisher 8, NVU-Lyndon 4
Fisher capitalized on a pair of Hornet errors in the bottom of the first inning to produce four unearned runs. After the Hornets got one run back in the top of the second inning, John Batista's three-run home run in the bottom half made it 7-1 Falcons.
The Hornets mounted a rally in the top of the fifth inning when Matt Doherty's (Gardner, MA) one-out double scored TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) and Codi Smith (Hartford, VT) followed with a two-run single to make it 7-4. That would be as close as the Hornets would get, as the Falcons tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
Ivanuel Hernansez paced the Fisher attack with three hits and two runs batted in. Victor Torres had a pair of hits and Jonathan Rosado scored three times. Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) and Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) each had a pair of hits for the Hornets.
Andres Meletiche started and allowed four Hornet runs over five innings of work to earn the victory. Lyndon starter Sam Ognenoff allowed seven runs, only three earned, to take the loss. Cooper Whitehouse (South Berwick, ME) was solid in relief for the Hornets, allowing only one run and four hits over 4.1 innings.
Game 2 - Fisher 4, NVU-Lyndon 3
Jordan Goseelin's two-out walkoff RBI double propelled Fisher to a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. The Hornets had tied things in the top half of the seventh inning on Smith's two-out, two-run home run over the left field wall.
Lyndon struck first in the contest when Santaw singled home Parker Perron (Barton, VT) in the top of the second inning. Fisher grabbed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third. The Falcons added one run in the bottom of the sixth when pinch hitter Jacob Deziel led off with a triple and later scored on Hernandez's sacrifice fly.
Thornton, Smith, and Santaw each had two hits for the Hornets. The Falcons had six hits from six different players.
Christian Dow went the distance for Fisher and picked up the win. He struck out five and allowed only two earned runs over seven innings. Sean Cavanaugh (Londonderry, NH), the second of three Hornet pitchers, suffered the loss.
Lyndon will return to action next Tuesday when they host Norwich University in the home opener. First pitch at the Skip Pound Baseball Complex is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
