Box Score 2 Auburndale, FL - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team continued their trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with single games against Hanover College and Purchase College on Friday. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they came up on the short end of the scoreboard in both contests, falling 16-1 to Hanover and 6-1 to Purchase. Hanover improved to 5-3 on the season and Purchase picked up their first win in four starts. The Hornets remain winless in eight games this season.
Game 1 - Hanover 16, NVU-Lyndon 1
An eight run third inning spelled doom for the Hornets in the opener. Hanover drew five bases loaded walks off of Lyndon pitching during the rally. Zeke Porta and Spencer Coop each had three hits in the game for the Panthers. Mark Walkenhorst drove in three runs. Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) and Noah Barton (South Burlington, VT) each had a pair of base hits for the Hornets. Barton's second inning single drove in Thornton with Lyndon's only run. Tyler Roberge (Essex, VT) and Michael Pena (New City, NY) had Lyndon's other hits.
Andrew Littlefield struck out seven over six innings to pick up the win for Hanover. Camden Patten (Somersworth, NH) started and took the loss for the Hornets.
Game 2 - Purchase 6, NVU-Lyndon 1
Purchase jumped on the Hornets for four runs in the bottom of the first inning and kept Lyndon at bay the rest of the way. Matthew Nilsen's double was the big blow in the rally. Tucker Root (Middlefield, CT) led off the Hornet second with a double and scored on a base hit from Steven Friscia (Smithtown, NY) for Lyndon's only run of the game. Thornton's fourth inning double was the Hornets' only other hit of the game.
Cody Hennequin went eight innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four to earn the win. Lyndon starter Sam Ognenoff (Brattleboro, VT) took the loss, going five innings and allowing five runs, four earned, with five strikeouts and three walks.
The Hornets will face Neumann University on Saturday afternoon at 1:15 pm on the main field at Lake Myrtle Park.
