Hornets sweep UMaine-Presque Isle to run winning streak to eight games

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team continued to get outstanding pitching and timely hitting in running its winning streak to eight games on Tuesday afternoon.  The Hornets swept their North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the University of Maine at Presque Isle, taking the opener, 12-1, and the nightcap, 8-1.The Hornets raise their overall record to 15-17 and their NAC mark to 7-3, while the Owls fall to 1-26 on the season and 0-10 in conference.

Game 1 - NVU-Lyndon 12, UMaine-Presque Isle 1

After a slow start through the first three innings, the Hornets got the bats going in the fourth inning and wound up pounding out 14 hits, including four extra base hits.  Codi Smith (Hartford, VT), Caleb Laroche (Franklin, VT), and Noah Barton (South Burlington, VT) each had a pair of hits while Jason Doris (Lincoln, RI) and Ryder Thornton (Essex, VT) each drove in a pair of runs.

Matt Page (Groton, VT) started and threw seven shutout innings for the Hornets to pick up the win.  Page allowed only three hits and struck out 13 while walking only two.  Cooper Whitehouse (South Berwick, ME) came on to ptich a scoreless eight inning and Brody Haas (Groveton, NH) finished things out, allowing one run in the ninth.  UMPI starter Barydon Kennedy went 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs, six earned, and six hits while being tagged with the loss.

Game 2 - NVU-Lyndon 8, UMaine-Presque Isle 1

Smith's hitting and the pitching of Tyler Davis (Barre, VT) were the dominant stories of the nightcap.  Smith went four for four from the plate with a double, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.  Meanwhile Davis threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out 13 Owls in the process.  Doris added a single and a double, driving in one.

William Stinson's single and Kennedy's RBI double were the only hits for the Owls.  Colby Spencer took the loss, allwoing two runs and striking out six in 3.1 innings of work.

The Hornets and Owls will complete the four game series with another doubleheader on Wednesday.  First pitch is scheduled for noon at the Skip Pound Baseball Complex.  Lyndon will honor its nine seniors between games of the doubleheader.
