Hornet baseball takes first two of four game set at Husson to clinch NAC Playoff berth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bangor, ME - The Lyndon State College baseball team combined outstanding pitching with some timely hitting in sweeping Husson University on Saturday. The Hornets won a 3-0 pitcher's duel in the opener, then pounded out 13 hits in an 8-1 win in the nightcap.  With the wins, the Hornets also clinched a berth on the North Atlantic Conference Championship Tournament.  Lyndon is now 16-14 on the season and 13-5 in conference, while Husson falls to 13-21 overall and 8-12 on the season.

Game 1 - Lyndon 3, Husson 0

Both starting pitchers, Lyndon's John Boulay (Dighton, MA) and Husson's Jesse Colford (Bangor, ME) were extremely sharp right from the opening inning.  Through the first six innings the Hornets managed only one hit, a fourth inning single from Codi Smith (Hartford, VT), and three total baserunners against Colford.  Meanwhile, Boulay also kep the Eagles in check, allowing only three hits over six innings.

With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Zak Johnson (East Hampton, CT) tripled to center field, only the Hornets' second hit of the game.  Ryder Thorton (Essex, VT) followed with a single, scoring Johnson.  Ben Rollins (Lincolnville, ME) also singled, and Lyndon capitalized on a Husson error to plate two more runs.

Andrew Whalen (Cumberland, RI) relieved Boulay in the bottom of the seventh and retired the Eagles in order to earn the save and give Lyndon the win.

Boulay allowed no runs and three hits over six innings in picking up the win.  He struck out three and walked one.  Colford went the distance and took the loss for the Eagles.  He struck out seven without yielding a walk and allowed only two earned runs.

Game 2 - Lyndon 8, Husson 1

The Hornets pounded out 13 hits to gain the nightcap win.  Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, CT) led the Hornet attack with three singles and three runs scored.  Johnson had two hits and two runs batted in, along with a run scored.  Codi Smith (Hartford, VT) had a single and a triple and two RBIs and Sam Ogenoff (Brattleboro, VT) also produced a pair of hits.  Sam Huston (Banfor, ME) scored the lone Husson run and reached base safely twice with a single and a walk.

Lyndon starter Rollins earned the win, going six innings and allowing only one run and four hits while striking out six ond only walking one batter.  Matt Page (Groton, VT) relieved Rollins and pitched a scoreless seventh inning.  Cody Collins (Bangor, ME) started and took the loss for the Eagles.  He only lasted three innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, as Husson used five different pitchers in the game.

The Hornets and the Eagles will play twice more on Sunday afternoon.  First pitch is set for 12:00 noon.
