Box Score 2 Northborough, MA - The Lyndon State College baseball team traveled to the New England Baseball Complex on Tuesday afternoon, facing Lesley College in a doubleheader. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they came up just short in both games, falling 3-2 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap. With the sweep, Lesley improves to 10-4 on the season, while Lyndon falls to 4-8.
Game 1 - Lesley 3, Lyndon 2
Returning to the diamond for the first time in over three weeks, the Hornets bats were relatively quiet for the day. Lyndon did break in front in game one when Zach Hale (St. Johnsbury, VT) was hit by a pitch to open the top of the third inning. Singles by Ryan Cordiero (Rollinsford, NH) and Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, CT) then loaded the bases. Codi Smith (Hartford, VT) then drew a walk to drive in a run, and Jason Doris (Lincoln, RI) singled home another to make it 2-0, Lyndon.
Hornet starter James Mundy (Brentwood, NH) kept the host Lynx off the scoreboard for the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Vincent Talerico (Valley Stream, NY) delivered a one-out single. Gage Reycroft (Ft. Myers, FL) followed with a single to left, but Talerico was thrown out overrunning second. Justin Clark (Chino Hills, CA) then doubled to right, and Ryan Pumphret (Shrewsbury, MA) delivered a two-run triple to right to tie things up.
After the Hornets went down in order in the top of the sixth, Jacob Cervantes (Oxnard, CA) led off the bottom of the inning with a double. Nicholas Ferragine (Randolph, NH) doubled home Cervantes to put Lesley in front, 3-2.
Zak Johnson (East Hampton, CT) was hit leading off the top of the seventh, and Cordiero sacrificed him to second. Following a walk to Eason, both runners advanced on a fielder's choice. However, with the tying run 90 feet away, Doris grounded out to Talerico at third to end the ball game.
Mundy went the distance and took the loss for Lyndon. He suurrendered three runs, all earned, and 11 hits while striking our five without walking a batter. Colin Reed (Bedford, NY), the third of four Lynx pitchers, pitched a scoreless sixth to pick up the win, with J.P. Agiorgousis (Hanscom AFB, MA) closing the door in the seventh to gain the save.
Game 2 - Lesley 3, Lyndon 1
Lesley jumped in front, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning of the night cap as Talerico led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Meanwhile, Lynx starter Pablo Casas (Cardiff, CA) kept the Hornets off the board for the first four innings.
Lesley added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Gabriel Coyne-Martinez (Pittsfield, MA) started things when he was hit by a pitch. Coyne-Martinez then came around to score on a double from Agiorgousis. Michael Fiorelli then singled, but Coyne-Martinez was thrown out overrunning third. Talerico then laced a double to left center, which allowed Fiorelli to come all the way around and score, making it 3-0, Lesley.
Lyndon broke through in the top of the fifth, as Ryder Thorton (Essex, VT) walked to open the inning. Thorton advanced to second on a fielder's choice, then scored on a Hale single.
Steven DePalma (Albertson, NY) relieved Casas in the top of the sixth and set the Hornets down in order in the final two innings to close the door and earn the save. Casas earned the win, while Jake Jourdain (Becket, MA) went the distance in taking the loss for Lyndon. Jordain gave up eight hits and struck out four without issuing a walk, while Casas yielded five hits over five innings.
The Hornets return to action on Wednesday, when they will travel to Franklin Pierce College to face Plymouth State University in a single game. First pitch is set for 7:00 pm. Lesley will travel to Elms College on Thursday.
