Hornets Split with Bison in First Games up North

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PLYMOUTH, Mass. – After almost a month off from games due to weather, the Lyndon State College baseball team took the field for a doubleheader with Nichols College Sunday evening, falling in the opener 4-0 before taking the second game 4-3.

Game 1

The Hornets struggled at the plate in the opener but junior Trevor Markey (Ocoee, Fla.) smacked a pair of hits while senior Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, Conn.) finished 1-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hornets.  Senior Jeff Williams (Gilsum, N.H.) took the loss after allowing four runs (zero earned) in 4.2 innings of work on seven hits while striking out three.

Kyle Bouchard finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI double for the Bison.  Danny Hayden pitched complete game shutout giving up three hits.

Game 2

Down 2-0 after the first inning, freshman Codi Smith (Hartford, Vt.) tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth after cracking a triple that plated Jason Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) and Trevor Markey.  On the next play, Smith scored to take the lead after Jake Perkins (Hartford, Vt.) reached on an error by the shortstop.

The Hornets added another run in the fifth as Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) singled, then swiped second base and third base before scoring on Ryan Cordeiro's (Rollinsford, N.H.) ground out to first.  Rollins proved to be the winning run as the Bison picked up one more run in the top of the sixth to come within one at 4-3.  Andrew Whalen shut the door in the top of the seventh, striking out two batters to record his fourth save of the season.

Sophomore Zak Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) took the win after surrendering just a pair of runs in the first inning before settling down to blank the Bison over the next three frames.  James Mundy (Brentwood, N.H.) threw two innings of scoreless relief before Whalen came in to close.

Vincent Amato (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched the complete six innings for the Bison, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out three.

The Hornets (7-5) look to start conference play at home against UMaine-Farmington on Saturday, April 8 at 12:00 p.m.

Nichols (10-7) face Eastern Nazaren at the New England Baseball Complex at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 3.
