Box Score Game 2
After a scoreless first inning, the Chargers put up two runs in the top of the second. A single from Liam Datres De la Blotier (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) plated Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.) to get things going. After a walk, Musco hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.).
The rain became steady as the second game proceeded but both teams would go scoreless over the next two innings. It was Lyndon's turn to get things going in the bottom of the fifth though as they posted three runs, putting pressure on the Charger defense to make plays. Jake Perkins (Hartford, Vt.) led the inning off with a single and then advanced to second as the ball was booted further into left field. Perkins advanced to third on a wild pitch before Tufo drew a pinch-hit walk. David Laroche (Franklin, Vt.) followed with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to left to bring home Perkins. Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) then grounded a ball back to the pitcher but a throw to second to get Tufo went wide, leaving runners on first and second. Things continued to get worse for the Charger defense. On a strike out Tufo broke for third base and slid hard into third as the throw came in low and bounced off of Tufo's foot and into foul territory, allowing Tufo to run home to tie the game at 2-2. Eason Jr. then singled up the middle, bringing home Rollins for the 3-2 lead. The Chargers finally got out of the inning after a pop up to the pitcher.
The coaches and umpires assessed field conditions before the start of the sixth inning and decided to halt the game.
Play resumed on Thursday at Colby-Sawyer College. After a scoreless sixth inning, the Chargers picked up two runs in the top of the seventh. A leadoff double from Tim Donovan (Litchfield, N.H.) put a runner in scoring position. Donovan was sacrificed to third before Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) scored him on a single to left. The Hornets then picked up a second out on a fly out. On the next batter, Avellino swiped second base before Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) singled down the left field line to score him.
The Hornets were able to get runners on second and third with two in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to get a run across, falling 4-3.
Andrew Whalen (Cumberland, R.I.) suffered just his second blown save in nine chances this season, pitching in the top of the seventh inning. James Mundy (Brentwood, N.H.) received the no decision after pitching five innings, giving up six hits and two runs.
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) earned the win for the Chargers after pitching two scoreless innings to finish the resumed game.
