Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Lyndon State College baseball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games with Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday afternoon. Lyndon won game one 6-4, while Colby-Sawyer took game two 8-2.
Game One
The Chargers started the scoring in the bottom of the first when sophomore Doug Avellino, who reached on a double, came around on an error.
The Hornets took the lead in the next half inning with a pair of runs. Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, Conn.) walked to begin the frame and eventually scored on a misplay later in the inning. Sophomore Jake Jourdain (Becket, Mass.) also had an RBI single in the frame plating Ryan Cordeiro (Rollinsford, N.H.).
The Chargers knotted the game in the third on an RBI single from sophomore Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.).
The Hornets put four on the board in the fourth with the big hit coming from sophomore David Laroche (Franklin, Vt.). With runners on second and third, Laroche hit a two-run single to center to put the Hornets back in front 4-2. Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) knocked in the third run of the inning with a hit to left and was then involved in a double-steal that scored Kevin Tufo (Colchester, Conn.).
The Chargers would add single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth on RBI singles from Avellino and Brendan Thurber but could not complete the comeback.
Freshman Ben Rollins (Lincolnville, Maine) tossed six innings and did not allow an earned run to earn his second win of the season for Lyndon. Sophomore reliever Andrew Whalen (Cumberland, R.I.) got his third save with a scoreless inning of work.
Junior Chris Mitchell Jr. took the loss for the Chargers going 3.1 innings. Sophomore Andrew Carbone pitched the remaining 3.2 innings and gave up just one hit.
Lyndon's Cordeiro went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the team.
Avellino and junior Nathan Frongillo had two hits apiece for Colby-Sawyer.
Game Two
After the Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double from Aaron Catalani (Colorado Springs, Colo.), the Chargers scored seven unanswered runs with three in the second and four in the fourth giving them the 7-1 advantage going into the fifth inning.
Each team would get an unearned run in the sixth with the Hornets' Eason earning an RBI, plating Reece Tanguay (Essex Junction, Vt.). Connor Henry added the run for the Chargers. This would close out the scoring for the night, allowing the Chargers the 8-2 victory.
Cordeiro added two more hits to give him five on the day to lead Lyndon.
The Chargers received a great pitching performance from senior Mike Bowse in the night cap. The right-hander threw a complete game with four strikeouts and did not allow an earned run to register his third win of the season.
Zak Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) took the loss for the Hornets going 3.1 innings allowing nine hits, seven earned runs, and striking out one. Mike Raimondi (Methuen, Mass.), Zach Hale (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), and Josh Kennison (Barre, Vt.) finished out the game with an inning each.
Lyndon goes to 8-24 overall and 5-15 in conference action. The Hornets will host Norwich tomorrow for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 13-19 overall and 8-12 in the NAC. The Chargers will travel to UMaine-Farmington for a pair of doubleheaders against the Beavers over the weekend.
