Beavers build big leads early, win two over Hornets

FARMINGTON, Maine – The Lyndon State College baseball team visited the University of Maine at Farmington Saturday afternoon, suffering two tough losses, 16-5 and 12-2.

Game 1

UMF used seven runs in the first two innings to gain an early lead but Lyndon answered with three runs in the third inning.  Ryan Cordeiro singled to center to bring in Jake Jourdain before Devon Rollins singled to plate Andre Eason Jr. and Reece Tanguay.

The Beavers had a big fourth inning, scoring nine runs to push the lead to 16-3. 

Cordeiro scored a run of his own in the top of the fifth on a John Boulay single to right.  The Hornets added another run in the top of the seventh when Michael Pena hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Rollins but the Hornets were unable to mount a significant comeback as they fell 16-5.

Nate Pushard took the win in six innings of work surrendering four earned runs and 11 hits.

Game 2

UMF jumped on the board first again with two runs in the first but Devon Rollins answered with a solo home run for the Hornets in the top of the second to cut the lead to 2-1.  The Beavers added four more runs in the bottom of the inning to push the lead to 6-1.

Reece Tanguay added another run for the Hornets in the third off a bunt from Ian Machia that was misplayed by the pitcher.

The Beavers went on to score a run in the bottom of the third while adding five more in the fourth to extend the lead to 12-2 and eventually finish with the win. 

Riley Chickering earned the win for UMF yielding four hits and one earned run in six innings of work.

Rollins finished the day going 4-for-7 with two runs and three RBIs.  Cordeiro recorded one run and an RBI while going 3-for-4 at the plate.

Lyndon (4-18, 1-9 NAC) and UMF (10-10, 3-7 NAC) are back at it Sunday to finish out the season series with another doubleheader.
