Box Score 2 QUINCY, Mass. – The Lyndon State College baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon at Adams Field.
Eastern Nazarene took the first game 4-0 before earning a 3-1 win in game two. Eastern Nazarene improves to 7-6 on the season with the results while Lyndon State sinks to 3-9 overall.
Aaron Catalini paced the Hornets offensively going 4-for-5 on the day and scoring the lone run. Ryan Cordeiro went 3-for-6 with one RBI.
Zach Zaino paced the home side offensively with three hits on the day while adding an RBI and a run scored. Justin Wagner swiped three bases while landing two hits, scoring twice and driving in one RBI.
Eastern Nazarene snagged a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Cameron Fiorentino scurried home on a wild pitch.
The Lions added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to widen the margin to 4-0.
Brent Houle (3-0) picked up the complete-game win on the mound for the Lions in the first game.
Jeff Williams (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season giving up four earned runs in five innings of work while striking out five. Mike Raimondi surrendered one hit in one inning of relief.
In game two, the hosts knocked in a run in the bottom of the first to establish an early 1-0 advantage. Esposito flared a base knock into shallow left field to score Connor Simpson from third base.
Eastern Nazarene added a run in the second inning to increase its lead to 2-0.
The Hornets cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth, 2-1, when Cordeiro laced a single into left field to plate Catalini.
The Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to reclaim a two-run lead, 3-1. Zaino roped a double to straight-away centerfield to drive in Brandon Wynne.
Cameron Fiorentino registered the win for the Lions, tossing six innings while striking out five. Nick Story grabbed the save after closing out the game in the seventh.
John Boulay (1-1) took the loss for the Hornets, pitching 3 1/3 innings while surrendering two earned runs. Zak Johnson threw the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits.
"We played solid defense today and pitched well," stated head coach Tom White. "We took some great at-bats just were not able to come up with hits with runners in scoring position but that will come."
"Happy with the effort today," White continued. "But we know what we need to improve on."
The Hornets travel to take on Castleton University in a doubleheader Saturday April 2 as they begin North Atlantic Conference play.
