Box Score CASTINE, Maine – The Lyndon State College men's basketball team continued North Atlantic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Maine Maritime Academy, losing 67-56.
The Hornets jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Mariners tied it up 5-5 with 14:19 remaining in the first half. After Lyndon put in two more points Maine Maritime went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-7 lead.
The Mariners slowly built the lead up to 12 with 40 seconds to play in the half but a jumper from Kendrick Mills (Bellows Falls, Vt.) as time expired, ending the half 34-24 in favor of the Mariners.
The Hornets fought back with a 7-2 run over the first three minutes of the second half to cut the lead to 36-31. Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) hit a jumper and Zachary Radcliffe (Rumford, Maine) sank a three to make it a 10-point game at 15:56 for the Mariners. Lyndon's Corey Frost answered with back-to-back threes to make it 41-37 with 14:50 remaining.
Following another Radcliffe three, the Hornets scored six-straight to cut the lead to 49-47 but Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) hit a three and drew a foul. Capitalizing on the four-point play by Thayer, the Mariners took a 53-47 lead at 6:55.
The Hornets added three points to close the gap to 53-50, but Thayer hit a jump shot and Radcliffe sank another three to extend the lead to 58-50 with three minutes to go.
The Mariners outscored the Hornets 9-4 to close out the final two minutes and claim the victory.
Kevin Love (Bristol, Conn.) led the Hornets with 18 points, four rebounds and two assists, while teammate Shaun Hill (Providence, R.I.) chipped in with 16 points, a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Thayer ended the afternoon with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double, while also dishing out three assists and two steals. Radcliffe recorded 15 points, all from beyond the arc, two rebounds, two assists and a steal and Newcomb tallied 14 points, four assists, a steal and a rebound.
Lyndon (7-13, 5-9 NAC) hosts New England College Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to continue North Atlantic Conference play.
Maine Maritime (4-16, 3-10 NAC) travels to play UMaine-Farmington Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
