Kansas City, MO - Three members of the Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court for the 2025-2026 academic year, as announced on Wednesday.  This is the ninth consecutive year that at least one Hornet has been named to the Honors Court

The Hornet program has also been named a recipient of the NABC 2025-2026 Team Academic Excellence Award.  This is the seventh consecutive year that Lyndon has earned the distinction, the only seven times that the Hornets have been honored in the 14 year history of the award.

The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize programs that completed the 2025-26 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.  The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and graduate student men's basketball players who finished the 2025-26 year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Senior Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) and graduate student Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) both earned Honors Court selection for the third year in a row.  Senior Chad Martin (Henniker, NH) was a repeat Honors Court selection, having earned recognition in 2024-25.  Doyle, Gonyea, and Martin were Lyndon''s tri-captains this past season.

Doyle graduated in May with Bachelor of Arts degree in History.  He was a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection and a three-time North Atlantic Conference All-Academic selection.  Doyle started in all 25 games this past season and averaged 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest.  He played three seasons with the Hornets after transferring from Cazenovia College following his freshman season.  He finished his career with 497 points and 463 rebounds.  Doyle recently accepted a position as graduate assistant at Utica University, where he will serve as an assistant basketball coach while completing his Master's degree.

Gonyea graduated in May of 2025 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, and is currently working toward his Master of Business Administration degree .  He is a three-time CSC Academic All-District selection and was named NAC All-Academic four times.  At Lyndon's 2025 Commencement he was named the Outstanding Graduating Senior.  Gonyea was named the NAC Man of the Year for 2025-26, the conference's highest honor.  He is a two-time 1st Team NAC All-Conference selection, was the North Atlantic Conference Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year for 2024-25, and was named to the D3hoops.com Region 1 All-District 3rd Team a year ago.  Gonyea averaged 20.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game and was 3rd in the NAC in scoring this season.  He concluded his career with 1,551 points, the most by any Lyndon player in the modern Division III era.  He also grabbed 332 rebounds and handed out 215 assists.  While completing his Master's degree he has begun his professional career working as a Sales & Quality Control Lab Technician & Executive Leadership Trainee with Gehring Tricot Corporation in Dolgeville, NY.

Martin graduated in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science.  He was a two-time CSC Academic All-District selection and a four-time NAC All-Academic selection.  He played in 22 games this season, starting in each of them and averaging 1.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per contest.  Martin played in 84 games over his four-year Lyndon career.  He scored 128 points, grabbed 221 rebounds, and recorded 115 assists.  Martin will begin work on his Master's Degree in Sport Science at Springfield College this fall.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows

1. Academically a junior, senior, or graduate student and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 academic year.
3. Member of a four-year institution with at least one active NABC member coach.

This marks the sixth consecutive year that multiple Hornets have been named to the Honors Court in the same year and the eighth consecutive year that the program has had at least one Honors Court selection.  Previous Lyndon honorees include:

The NABC Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2025-2026 academic year.  In order to earn an award, institutions must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes who competed at any point during the 2025-2026 season.  The Hornets posted a 3.02 composite grade point average over the year.

The largest professional association of basketball coaches, the NABC currently claims a membership of nearly 5,000 men's basketball coaches throughout the ranks of the NCAA, NAIA, junior and community colleges and high school.   Over 2,400 players earned spots on the NABC Honors Court and nearly 400 programs received NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards for 2024-25.
