Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Lyndon State College split a doubleheader with the Minnesota School of Engineering (MSOE) Monday afternoon.
Game 1
The Hornets used a big fifth inning to come back from a three-run deficit to top MSOE 6-4 in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Raiders used a three-hit, two-run first inning to jump out to an early lead. The Hornets were able to get one run back in the bottom of the second inning when Michael Pena singled in Nate Stewart from third.
Both teams were held scoreless until the Raiders plated another pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Hornets' aggressiveness on the offensive end was rewarded with a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth as they scored five runs on three hits while the Raider defense recorded five errors.
Lyndon's defense held strong over the final two innings to give them their second win of the season.
Jeff Williams (2-0) had another strong outing as he picked the win on the mound, giving up eight hits and four earned runs in his five innings of work. Zak Johnson threw two scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Nathan Stewart recorded two hits, two runs, and two RBIs on three at-bats to lead the Hornets offensively. Pena finished with two RBIs while Andre Esaon Jr. went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored a run.
Game 2
The Hornets were unable to make a comeback in the second game of the doubleheader, falling 6-4.
Lyndon jumped on top with three runs in the top of the third inning with a two-RBI double from Reece Tanguay. Tanguay later scored when Devon Rollins struck out on a wild pitch that got past the catcher.
MSOE answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to knot it up at 3-3.
The Raiders then added another run in the bottom of the fourth but the Hornets would answer in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt from Tanguay that would allow Kevin Tufo to score.
The Raiders took the lead again with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Hornets were unable to answer this time as they were retired in succession in the top of the seventh inning to finish the game.
Tanguay finished 1-for-3 at the plate with one run and three RBIs.
Andrew Whalen took the loss for the Hornets giving up two runs on three hits in working the sixth inning. John Boulay recorded four earned runs in 3 innings while Mike Raimondi pitched two scoreless innings.
