Box Score 2 WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – The Hornets had a tough day on the diamond Saturday, losing a pitcher's duel 1-0 before falling 12-2 in the second game of a double-header.
Game 1
Despite each team getting multiple runners into scoring position, the game remained scoreless through five and a half innings until Capital was able to plate the lone run of the game.
Alexander Smith led the frame off with a triple before Logan Bastin gave Capital the edge with a fly ball to center than was deep enough to score the Smith from third base.
In the top of the seventh, Crusader hurler Shane Wellman struck out the first two batters before giving up a single to Jake Jourdain. Wellman was then able to pick off Jourdain at first to end the game.
Wellman recorded the win for the Crusaders with 13 strikeouts while giving up three hits.
Ben Rollins gave the Hornets five innings of scoreless work while surrendering five hits and striking out four. Zak Johnson took the loss in one inning on the mound, giving up one hit and one run.
Game 2
The second game of the day was a different story. The Crusaders jumped out in front in the top of the first inning with one run and then added four more in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Capital added two more in the top of the fourth before Lyndon got on the board in the bottom of the inning. A single from Devon Rollins and a walk from Jake Jourdain put two runners on. John Boulay grounded out to move both runners into scoring position. A passed ball would plate both runners shrinking the lead to 7-2.
After two scoreless innings the Crusaders plated five in the seventh, including a 3-run homerun from Logan Bastin.
Neil Robinson took the loss for the Hornets in three innings of work, allowing five runs on three hits while striking out three. Ben Brooks, Shane LaCroix, Jordan Baker, and Matthew Tritto also spent time on the mound for the Hornets.
Alex Mukensturm gained the win for the Crusaders in five innings on the mound, giving up two hits and two runs, both unearned. Casey Hamrick and Jared Bass covered the final two innings for the Crusaders.
