Hornets held to draw by Panthers

Box Score

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College men's soccer team hosted Plymouth State University Monday afternoon in non-conference action with the game ending in a 2-2 draw after two overtime periods.

The first half played out relatively even as each team mounted a few attacks, but defense on both sides prevented any easy opportunities.  With the score even, intensity remained high throughout the half.

The Hornets broke the tie early in the second half at the 49:42 mark with a goal from Liam Kelleher (Manchester, Vt.) off of an assist from Dylan Cherko (Manchester, Conn.).  On a free-kick, Cherko connected with Kelleher on the left side who headed it past the Panther keeper, Jimmy Mansour (Derry, N.H.), to give the Hornets the 1-0 advantage.

With only a minute later, Cherko connected again, but this time with Devin Cowan (Saranac Lake, N.Y.).  Cherko found Cowan within the keeper box, who sent it past the left side of Mansour.

At the 70:10 mark, the Panthers' Jerry Randolph (Malmo, Sweden) connected with Erik Ljunglof (Orebro, Sweden) from the right side who got one touch on it, placing it in the back of the net.

A similar situation played out for the Panthers at the 74:17 mark as Joni Hongisto (Kaarina, Finland) crossed from the right side with Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) getting a head on it, netting it to the right side.  With the score tied 2-2, the game headed to overtime.

It was an exciting double-overtime as both teams got multiple shots off that tested the keepers.  Some shots closer than others, but neither team was able to capitalize leaving the match deadlocked at 2-2.

Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, N.Y.) had seven saves to Mansour's four.

Lyndon hosts Senior Day this Saturday, October 22nd at 2:30 p.m. against Johnson State.

Plymouth travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday, October 22nd with a 1:00 p.m. start.
