Hornets drop opener; nightcap suspended

Box Score

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Castleton jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning of play Wednesday en route to a 14-3 win over Lyndon in the opening game of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Skip Pound Field.

In Game 2, the contest was suspended with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning due to poor field conditions. That contest will resume tomorrow at 2 p.m. when the Hornets and Spartans get together for their regularly schedule doubleheader on the Castleton campus.

In the opener, Nick Swim doubled home Taylor Vile to give the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage. A pair of run-scoring singles by Dan Errico and Josh Jennato upped the lead to 3-0 before Jimmy Buckley doubled home Jennato for the final run of the frame.

Castleton plated two more runs an inning later on a double by Tyler Lord and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Swim. Trailing by six, the Hornets battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Mike LoVerde (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Swim singled home another run in the fourth to up the lead to 7-1 before the Spartans plated six runs in the fifth to blow the game open. Tyler Hoare had a two-run single in the uprising which was fueled by four Lyndon errors.

The Hornets managed to scratch out two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a run-scoring double by Zach Hale (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) and a fielder's choice. However, Castleton would tally the final run of the game in the seventh on a solo home run by Errico to left.

Lord led Castleton with three hits while Swim, Errico, Buckley, Hoare and Soren Pelz-Walsh added two each. Devin Hayes went six innings to get the victory allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out 10 and walking one.

Michael Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) went 2-for-2 in the game and Lyndon starter Jeff Williams (Gilsum, N.H.) took the loss. He allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits while fanning five and walking two.

After tomorrow's twin bill with Castleton, the Hornets return to Skip Pound Field on Friday when they host Colby-Sawyer College at 1 p.m.
