Lyndon Drops First Two in Four Game Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Husson University beat Lyndon 11-4 and 3-1 in a North Atlantic Conference double-header on Saturday.

The patience of the Husson batters was the determining factor in today's games as they struck out two times between two games, while Lyndon batters struck out 12 times total in both games.

"Game one was back and forth, we swung the bat pretty good early on," said Lyndon Head Coach Tom White. "I think we walked and hit batters about eight times, that's been our Achilles heel all year, giving away 'free' bases."

Lyndon found themselves down 2-0 in the second inning when Dylan Newton got things rolling with a leadoff single. Nate Stewart sacrificed himself to advance Newton and Ian Murdock grounded out to third base. The Hornets rallied with two outs in the inning.

They took advantage on error, followed up by two straight singles from Ryan Cordeiro and Kevin Tufo, loading the bases for Andre Eason Jr. He also singled, bringing in two runs and giving Lyndon a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

Husson scored four times in the third inning to take a 6-3 lead. In Lyndon's half of the inning, Ian Sackett hit a solo-home run over the left field fence to cut the lead to 6-4. Husson would dominate the fifth inning, scoring five runs and they wouldn't look back in game one.

Game two saw a much different pace as both Lyndon pitcher Brandon Flood and Husson pitcher Robert Graff threw three straight scoreless innings. The Eagles would break through in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead, but Lyndon came right back in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at one.

"We're blue collar guys we come ready to work," said White. "If we don't play well one game we throw it out, that's kind of our mantra, next pitch next play and that's exactly what these guys did."

Husson came out after a 35 minute rain delay and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Jordan Carter found his way home after a wild pitch. Husson wouldn't look back in game two, adding an insurance run in the seventh to cruise to a 3-1 victory over Lyndon.

"They're very disciplined batters, they don't swing at too many bad pitches," said White. "They have pretty good eyes, but we don't worry about our opponents, we play our game and execute our bunts, try to steal some bases, put together some good at bats… really play fundamentally sound baseball."

With the loss, the Hornets move to 5-15 overall, and 4-6 in North Atlantic Conference action. Husson goes to 20-12 overall, and 15-3 in NAC play.

Lyndon turns around to wrap up a four-game weekend series with Husson tomorrow afternoon, first pitch for game one is set for 12:00 p.m.

"We just can't wait to get out here and play again tomorrow," said White. "If we play the way we can play, we're going to be okay."
