Box Score 2 LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Lyndon split it's doubleheader matchup with New England on Wednesday, losing the opener 12-2 and before winning the nightcap 7-3.
"Much of the difference in the first game was that New England came to play," said Lyndon Head Coach, Tom White. "They took advantage of our mistakes and pushed the tempo and simply out played us in the first game."
Christopher Smith and Matt Krum led the way for the Pilgrims in game one with three hits each, while Steve DeLuca went two for five with one RBI.
Billy Johnson (Saratoga Spring, N.Y.) pitched five and two-thirds innings for Lyndon, allowing nine runs on ten hits, six of them earned. Kyle Bernier earned the victory for New England, pitching a complete game, striking out six batters and allowing just two earned, one of them earned.
Much of Lyndon's success in Game 2 came from Michael Raimondi as he struck out three batters in two innings pitched, earning his first every collegiate victory.
"He's tough as nails," said White. "We do a lot of mental training and Mike does everything to a tee, He has success because he believes in himself."
DeLuca and Vincent Backert both had three hit games, while Francesco DiRe went two for four in game two.
Lyndon found themselves down 3-0 to the Pilgrims in the bottom of the third inning, and they would complete a comeback, as Nathan Stewart (Newport, Vt.) would steal home, giving Lyndon a 4-3 advantage, and the eventual game winner.
"I think adversity is nothing compared to what we deal with here in Vermont, you know battling the conditions and the elements," said White. "These guys, we're building a culture where we don't give up until that last out is recorded and we keep battling."
Dylan Newton (St. Albans, Vt.) led the way for Lyndon as he drove in two runs, while Dire matched that with two RBI's of his own. White spoke about the effort and determination of his team.
"We just keep getting better everyday," he said. "And if we lose we're going to make you beat us."
Lyndon will be taking on the University of Maine at Farmington tomorrow afternoon at Skip Pound Field., First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
"Farmington is an excellent team you know they swing the bat they beat us pretty bad on Sunday," said White. "We have our 1-2, Jeff and Mason, going on the hill, those guys are fired up to pitch at home and we'll be ready to go."
