Lyndon eliminated from NAC Tournament

Box Score

CASTLETON, Vt. – Fourth-seeded Lyndon put up a battle, but it wasn't enough to advance to the championship round of the 2014 North Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament.

The Hornets fell 7-2 to eventual tourney champion Castleton in the opening round before dropping a tough 3-1 decision to third-seeded UMaine-Farmington in the second round of the double-elimination competition.

Castleton 7, Lyndon 2

The Hornets jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first on the Spartans as Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) scored on a throwing error, but Castleton responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring ground out by Joe Borowski.

The Spartans added to their lead with single runs in the fourth and sixth, but Lyndon scratched out a run – on Ian Murdock's (Wilmington, Vt.) infield single - in the eighth to slash the deficit to 3-2. However, Castleton plated four runs in the bottom of the frame on a Borowski home run and a Taylor Vile RBI single to put the game out of reach.

Samuel Spencer got the win allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out five and walking two in eight innings of work. Matthew McNamee went 4-for-4 for the winners while Vile, Tyler Lord and Daniel Errico added two hits each.

Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) took the loss for Lyndon allowing six earned runs on 12 hits while fanning four and walking one in seven and two-thirds innings. Murdock had two hits in the contest.

UMaine-Farmington 3, Lyndon 1

Lyndon's season came to an end in the second round of the NAC Tournament with a 3-1 loss to the University of Maine at Farmington.

The Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles by Trevor Hisler and Sean Cabaniss and added a third run in the sixth on a Hornet throwing error. Lyndon plated a run on the seventh on a Chris Sevigney (Lowell, Mass.)  RBI single, but it proved to be the only scoring the Hornet could muster in the game.

Kyle Peterson went the distance to get the win allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out three and walking two. Cabaniss had three hits in the contest and Jordan Croteau had two.

Mason Brewer (Wicasset, Maine) took the loss for Lyndon allowing two earned runs on nine hits while fanning four and walking two. Rollins closed out his sophomore season with three hits in the game.

For their outstanding efforts throughout the tournament, Matthews and Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
