Lyndon earns first win of 2014 season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BANGOR, Maine – Lyndon opened its 2014 "home" schedule with four games – including the Hornets' first North Atlantic Conference win of the season – in four-game series played on the Harold Alfond Diamond at Husson University.

Game 1 – Thomas 6, Lyndon 1

Tim Locke swatted a two-run double and Zack Groat had a run-scoring two-bagger, to lead the Terriers to a 6-1 win over the Hornets. Nik Beeson plated another run with a sacrifice fly in support of Thomas starter James McLamb, who went the distance to get the win.

He allowed no earned runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking two.

Ian Sackett had two hits for the Hornets (0-3) and Kevin Tufo knocked in the lone Lyndon run of the contest with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Losing Zach Hatin went three and two-thirds inning allowing four earned runs on four hits while fanning and walking no one.

Game 2 – Thomas 7, Lyndon 2

Anree Benitez and Nate Peasley had two hits and an RBI each to propel Thomas to the sweep of the twin bill. Beeson continued to swing a hot bat, swatting a two-run triple in the third to break a scoreless tie. Locke went six innings to get the victory, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out 13 and walking one.

Michael Cartularo's two-run single in the sixth plated both Hornet runs and Mason Brewer absorbed the loss. He allowed five earned runs on five hits while fanning seven and walking three.

Game 3 – Lyndon 4, Thomas 3

Devon Rollins scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to lift Lyndon to a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Terriers. The Hornets loaded the basses in the frame on three consecutive bunt singles by Alexis Guzman, Tufo and Rollins only to see Tyler Pelletier ground into a 1-2-3 double play.

A few pitches later losing pitcher Isiah Fleming uncorked a wild pitch that eluded Beeson and allowed Rollins to scamper home with the winning run.

Ian McGregor had a two-run single for the winners and Pelletier knocked in another run with a single in the first. Sam Matthews tossed a complete game in getting the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking seven.

Benitez and Groat accounted for four of Thomas' six hits in the contest and Fleming was tagged with the loss. He allowed three earned runs on three hits while fanning three and walking three.

Game 4 – Thomas 12, Lyndon 0

The two-day, four-game series came to a crashing end as Thomas scored early and often en route to a 12-0 win over the Hornets.

C.J. Pendleton went seven strong innings to get the victory, allowing no runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking none. He would get all the offensive support in the second when the Terriers plated four runs on Benitez's inside-the-park grand slam to deep left centerfield. Benitez was a perfect 5-for-5 in the game to go along with five RBIs.

Jeff Williams took the loss for Lyndon allowing seven earned runs on eight hits while fanning one and walking two.
