Surging Hornets sweep Colby-Sawyer

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Lyndon ran its North Atlantic Conference winning streak to five games Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Colby-Sawyer. The Hornets took Game 1 by a score of 6-4 before recording a slim 3-2 victory in Game 2.

With the wins, Lyndon improves to 7-7 overall, and in the NAC, while the Chargers drop to 4-16 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

In the opener, after Colby-Sawyer had battled back to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Mike Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) came through with a game-winning two-run single in the top of the seventh to decide the issue. Lyndon erased a 2-0 deficit in the top of the sixth by plating four runs on a wild pitch, a balk and a passed ball, but Colby-Sawyer managed to battle back to tie the score at 4-4 heading into them final inning of play.

With Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) aboard, Cartularo singled to left to drive in both runners and give Hornet starter Mason Brewer (Wicasset, Maine) his second win of the season. Brewer went the distance, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out five and walking four.

"A lot of teams have walked Tyler (Pelletier) this season and Michael has made them pay," said Head Coach Tom White. "We worked hard this year on staying inside the ball and being patient. The guys are starting to buy into what we are doing and we are simply getting better as the season progresses."

In the nightcap, Lyndon made a 3-0 first inning lead stand to complete a sweep of the twin bill. Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury Academy) went seven strong innings to get the win allowing two earned runs on four hits while fanning two and walking one.

"Our pitchers battled all day and that's what kept us in it," said White. "Sam didn't have his best stuff today he kept up competitive for seven innings."

Pelletier had a run-scoring single to ignite the first inning rally and Cartularo drove home another run a few pitches later with a single through the left side. The Hornets' final run of the game would come on a Colby-Sawyer error.

Whitworth led Lyndon with two hits in the contest.
