Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine – Lyndon and the University of Maine at Farmington faced off in a four-game series held Saturday and Sunday at the John Winkin Complex/Harold Alfond Diamond at Husson University.
Saturday - Game 1: Farmington 12, Lyndon 0
In Friday's opener, UMF Joe Sullivan scattered three hits while the Beaver pounded out 10 of their own en route 12-0 shutout of the Hornets. The Beavers (5-15, 4-6 NAC) scored in every inning in game one, with a three-run fourth inning that gave Farmington an 8-0 lead.
Trevor Hisler went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, while Jordan Croteau and Sean Cabaniss each had a pair of hits. Ben Keene drove in three runs, and Dustin McCrossin plated two more on his home run in the third inning. UMaine-Farmington's last four hitters in the order went 8-for-11 in the first game, with eight runs and three RBI.
Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) and Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) had singles for Lyndon (4-6, 4-6 NAC), while Mike Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) tripled into center field in the second inning.
Sullivan faced 24 batters over seven innings on his way to his second complete game conference shutout of the season. He allowed just one walk and fanned four Hornets.
Zach Hatin (Burlington, Vt.) took the loss for Lyndon, after yielding three earned runs on three hits and one walk over two complete innings.
Saturday - Game 2: Lyndon 9, Farmington 4
UMaine-Farmington could not carry that momentum into the nightcap, and Lyndon salvaged the split with a 9-4 win in Game 2.
Lyndon's four-run uprising in the fifth inning put the Hornets in front, 5-2, in game two and provided a lead that Lyndon would not relinquish. Chris Sevigney's (Lowell, Mass.) two-out, three-run triple to right center keyed the inning, after three previous batters reached on a hit-by-pitch, an error, and a walk.
UMaine-Farmington got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Lyndon added two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
Ian Sackett (Lyndonville, Vt.) allowed three earned runs on five hits with two walks, but was credited with the win for the Hornets. UMaine-Farmington starter Kyle Peterson gave up just three hits and fanned five Hornets, but was on the hook for five runs, only one earned, and took the loss.
Sunday - Game 1: Farmington 13, Lyndon 5
Keene, Hisler and Tom Grady all had three hits to pace the Beavers to a 13-5 win over Lyndon in the first game of Sunday's North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader.
In game one, Lyndon (5-7, 5-7 NAC) built a 5-0 lead through the first two innings, before UMaine-Farmington got two of those runs back in the bottom of the second.
The Beavers took the lead with a four-run third inning, on singles by Keene and Hisler coupled with four walks and two Lyndon errors. Hisler and Keene each finished with a pair of runs batted in, while Keene also crossed for two runs.
Farmington put the game beyond reach with seven runs in the fourth. Grayson Beressi and Mark Leahy each stroked RBI doubles for the Beavers, while Keene plated two runs with a slow single to shortstop. Cabaniss also had a base hit for a run in the fourth.
Beaver starter Jimmy Neal allowed five runs; four earned, on seven hits and six walks over his five-and-a-third innings of work, and fanned five Hornets. Five of those hits were allowed in the first two innings.
Jeff Williams got the start for the Hornets, and was charged with six runs; all earned, on six hits and five walks, and took the loss. Seven different players had Lyndon's seven hits in the game.
Sunday - Game 2: Lyndon 5, Farmington 0
In the nightcap, Lyndon scored three runs in the third on one hit and a two-run error. With bases loaded, Pelletier hit a chopper back to Beaver pitcher Jory Humphrey who went for the force at home. However the UMF catcher couldn't get a handle on the ball and two runs scored as the ball rolled to the backstop.
The Hornets added two runs in the seventh on Sackett's two-out, two-run single up the middle.
Keene paced Farmington at the plate in game two with two hits, while senior Brett Wallingford, Mark Leahy, and Neal each had one hit.
Humphrey was tagged with the loss for the Beavers after allowing two earned runs on two hits and six walks against four strikeouts. Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) got the win for the Hornets, scattering five hits while fanning six UMF batters.
