Box Score 2 HENNIKER, N.H. – The Lyndon baseball team, behind a strong pitching performance and some timely hitting, swept a doubleheader from New England College Friday on the Pilgrims' home field. The Hornets won the opener by a slim 1-0 margin before taking the nightcap by a score of 7-3.
Game 1 – Lyndon 1, New England 0
Mason Brewer (Wicasset, Maine) went six strong innings and Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) came on in the seventh to get the save as Lyndon slipped by New England 1-0. Brewer allowed no earned runs on four hits while striking out four and walking none. He faced three batters over the minimum to earn his first victory of the 2014 season.
"Mason turned in a great performance today," said Head Coach Tom White. "He worked his fastball in and out and mixed in his curve ball well. He battled all through the game and was helped by our defense that came up big on a few occasions."
Matthews took over in the seventh and had to fight his way out of a jam after hitting a batter which put the tying run aboard. The senior right-hander managed to strikeout a batter in the frame and wriggle out of the situation to record his first save of the season.
"Sam exuded confidence today," said White. "He was strong and tough when he needed to be."
Lyndon scored the only run of the game in the fourth when Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) got aboard on a single to right and scored a few pitches later on Ian Sackett's double to center field.
Pelletier and Sackett had two hits each for the winners while Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) and Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.) chipped in one each.
Game 2 – Lyndon 7, New England 3 – 5 innings
Lyndon completed the sweep with a four-run, fifth inning uprising. The game was called after five innings of ply due to darkness.
The Hornets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when Whitworth reached second on an outfield error and scored moments later on a throwing error by Pilgrim catcher Steve DeLuca as he attempted to steal third base. Lyndon upped its advantage to 2-0 an inning later as Sackett singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice and scored a few pitches later on a passed ball.
"We have been working hard on our two-strike approach" said White. "We have been focusing on staying short, staying calm and relaxed and putting a good swing on the ball."
The Hornets third run came in the fourth as Ian Murdock (Wilmington, Vt.) singled, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and moved to third on another NEC Error. That set the stage for Kevin Tufo's (Colchester, Conn.) run-scoring single to right. One inning later, Lyndon plated four runs – highlighted by Sevigney's run-scoring double and a 2 RBI double off the bat of Alexis Guzman (Cutler Ridge, Fla.).
Game officials called the game one-half inning later, sealing Lyndon first twin bill sweep in two years.
Pelletier, Guzman and Tufo had two hits to lead the Hornets (3-5, 3-5) while Rollins, Sackett, Murdock and Sevigney added one each.
Brandon Flood (South Ryegate, Vt.) went the distance to get the win allowing two earned runs on four hits while fanning three and walking none.
"This is a nice start of our weekend," said White. "We're working on taking things everything day-by-day, game-by-game and pitch-by-pitch. If we can continue to play error-free baseball, competing every day and staying focus, we should do well."
Lyndon will face UMaine-Farmington Saturday and Sunday beginning at 3:30 p.m. Both doubleheaders with be played at Husson University's John Winkin Complex in Bangor, Maine.
