Box Score 2 WATERVILLE, ME- Thomas went extra innings to get a 7-6 win over Lyndon State in game one, and cruised to 7-1 win in game two and completed a four-game weekend sweep over the Hornets in a North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader. The Terriers improve to 5-11, while Lyndon drops to 0-12.
Sunday – Game 1: Thomas 7, Lyndon 6, 9 inn.
The Terriers were able to overcome an early first-inning deficit and pick up a 7-6 win in nine innings. Thomas also fell behind 6-4 in the eighth inning but rallied for two in the bottom half and would walk-off with the win in the following inning.
Jeffrey Richardson keyed the victory in game one for Thomas as he finished with three hits and a walk, while scoring two runs and driving in three. Thomas Cameron and Dillon Emerson each had a pair of hits to propel the victory, with Emerson driving in two.
Starting pitcher James McLamb overcame a tough three-run first inning to shut out the Hornets for the next 4 1/3 innings, while also compiling seven strikeouts. Isiah Fleming was the winning pitcher as he threw 2 1/3 innings in relief, striking out three.
Lyndon was lead at the plate by Robert Trucott (Sheffield, Vt.) who had four hits with one run batted in. Starting pitcher Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) went seven innings giving up four earned runs while striking out seven. Corey Wells (Barre, Vt.) picked up the loss for the Hornets when hit a tough ball to short with the bases loaded that was unable to be played.
Sunday – Game 2: Thomas 7, Lyndon 1
Thomas would get off to a hot start with a four-run first inning and would not look back as they would take down the Hornets 7-1 in game two.
Lyndon would strike first when Dylan Newton (St. Albans, Vt.) doubled to right field to drive in first run of the game in the first inning. The Terriers would answer the bell with four runs of their own in the bottom half, capped off by a two-run homerun by Cody Vigue.
Thomas would add runs in the fifth and sixth to expand the lead and close out the game to complete the sweep of the doubleheader. Vigue led the Terriers with two hits and runs batted in. Five other players also chipped in with hits for Thomas.
Tim Locke started the game but went only two due to some discomfort. Dylan McNally relieved him and went three innings allowing only one hit, while striking out two. Cameron and Vigue each threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Newton and Ian Sackett (Lyndonville, Vt.) led the Hornets at the plate with a double each. Zachary Hatin (Colchester, Vt.) started and went the full six innings on the mound for Lyndon.
On Saturday, Thomas was able to come away with a sweep over Lyndon.
Saturday, Game 1 – Thomas 5, Lyndon 4
The Terriers were able to capitalize on a big first inning, where they batted through the lineup plating home five runs, which ended up being all they needed in a 5-4 win.
Jeffrey Richardson doubled to right center, scoring Brett Sommers from second, then Richardson would cross the plate on a double steal. Tim Locke would then drive in Derek Kane on a fielder's choice. Zack Groat and Tim Bradford would count for the other two RBI in the big first inning for the Terriers.
After surrendering just two hits in the first inning, starter Jake Chamblee surrendered the first Hornet run in the top of the third as Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) singled to right to score Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.) from second.
Lyndon would add to its score in the bottom of the fifth as Robert Trucott (Sheffield, Vt.) would drive in two on a bases loaded single to center. A double to left field by Michael Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) would score another, as the Hornets would decrease the deficit to just one.
Lyndon would be unable to cut the deficit, as Isiah Flemming held the opponents hitless in two innings of relief, striking out two and recording his first collegiate save.
Chamblee was credited with the win, pitching five innings, striking out three, while giving up four earned runs.
Isaac Earle (Vernon, Vt.) was charged with the loss for Lyndon State pitching a complete game. Despite giving up five earned runs in the first, was able to get in the groove holding the Terriers to just two hits over the next five innings.
Saturday – Game 2: Thomas 7, Lyndon 4
Thomas continued its hot bats in the second game, plating home seven runs to secure the sweep of the doubleheader.
Lyndon State got on the board first as Dylan Newton (St. Albans, Vt.) singled to left field to drive in Whitworth in the first inning. The Terriers would respond however with two runs of their own in the bottom half, as Thomas Cameron and Terell Boudreau each drove in runs on singles to left field.
Thomas would cushion their lead with three runs in the second, with Kane picking up two RBI on a double to right center. A single by Cameron to right would plate home Kane for another run.
The Hornets would shrink their lead by picking up a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, but was not able to come from behind and get the victory.
Eric Sucy picked up his first win of the season, going 5.2 innings, while striking out three. Cody Vigue picked up the save, tossing a hitless seventh inning.
Mason Brewer (Wiscassett, Maine) pitched five innings for the away side, striking out four in the loss. Brandon Flood (South Ryegate, Vt.) held Thomas hitless in one inning of relief.
