Hornets end season on winning note

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Ian Sackett's two-run single in the bottom of the seventh plated the game-winning run and lifted Lyndon to a 9-8 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in the nightcap of a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader held Sunday at Skip Pound Field.

Trailing 8-5 heading into their last at bat, the Hornets loaded the bases and pushed across two runs against Beaver reliever Ben Pearson, who walked three of the six batters in the frame. After a walk to pinch-hitter Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.), that plated a run and moved the winning run into scoring position, Sackett (Lyndonville, Vt.) came through with a line drive single to right that decided the issue.

Sackett, R.T. Trucott (Sheffield, Vt.), Dylan Newton (St. Albans, Vt.) and Michael Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) had two hits each in the contest in support of senior Sam Matthews (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), who closed out his Lyndon career with a victory. He allowed five earned runs on 11 hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Newton and Cartularo had a two-run homer each in the game for Lyndon.

Matt Woodbury was a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles for Farmington and Ben Keen added three hits and a two runs batted in. Pearson took the loss allowing two earned runs on one hit while walking three and falling one.

In the opener, the Beavers jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four and one-half innings and coasted to victory.

Zach Keene and winning pitcher Dale Winchenbach pounded out three hits each for Farmington (9-20, 8-16) while Woodbury, Ben Keene and Joe Sullivan chipped in two. Winchenbach went six innings to get the win allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six and walking one.

Newton and Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) had two hits each for the Hornets (4-30, 4-20) and Isaac Earle (Vernon, Vt.) absorbed the loss. He allowed seven earned runs on eight hits while fanning two and walking two.
