Box Score 2 PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University baseball team pounded out 24 hits and scored 23 runs en route to sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Lyndon at Panther Park by scores of10-4 and 13-1.
Steve Beard led the Panthers with five hits on the day, including two doubles and three runs batted in. Brian Thompson and Justin Walsh both had two hits in each game for PSU, with Walsh driving in three.
Plymouth State bounced back from a pair of Little East Conference losses to improve to 14-11 this season. Lyndon dipped to 2-16.
After the teams traded runs in the first inning of the opener, PSU pulled away with single runs in the third and fourth innings and a five-run outburst in the fifth. Lyndon State plated three runs in the top of the seventh, but the late rally fell short.
Beard was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in the opener, leading a 14-hit Panther attack. Dave Hall had two hits, including a double, and knocked in three, while Walsh finished with two hits and two RBI. Jeff Runnals pitched the first six innings and recorded the win to improve to 3-1, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while fanning two.
Lyndon managed just five hits by five different players in the first game. Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) had a double and two runs batted in.
The teams again traded runs in the first inning of the nightcap, but PSU put the game away with a nine-run second inning.
Brandon Cox and Brendan Cosgrove each had two-run singles in the big inning. The Panthers added three more runs in the third inning, with Thompson smacking an RBI single to highlight the rally.
Kevin Allard picked up the win in relief for PSU, working a scoreless fourth inning in place of Michael Welch (Westfield, Mass.), who pitched the first three frames.
