Lyndon tops New England, nipped by Colby-Sawyer

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Lyndon broke into the win column for the first time in the 2013 season with a sweep of its North Atlantic Conference doubleheader with New England College. The Hornets won the opener 2-0 and took the night cap by a score of 4-1.

In Game 1, Isaac Earle (Vernon, Vt.) went the distance, allowing only three hits while striking out three, to get the victory. Run-scoring singles by Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) and Tyler Pelletier (St. Albans, Vt.) produced all the runs Lyndon would need to seal the win.

In Game 2, Sam Matthews went seven strong innings, allowing one earned run while fanning seven, to get the win. Rollins and Robert Trucott (Sheffield, Vt.) collected two hits each in the contest while Kyle Whitworth (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Dylan Newton plated one run each with a sacrifice fly.

On Thursday, Lyndon traveled to New London, N.H. for another NAC showdown, this time with Colby-Sawyer College. Kevin Keith and P.J. Singster each threw complete game shutouts as the Chargers defeated Hornets by identical scores of 1-0.

With the two wins, Colby-Sawyer evens its overall record to 10-10 and conference mark at 5-5. Lyndon falls to 2-14 overall and 2-6 in NAC play.

In the opener, Colby-Sawyer's Kevin Keith and Lyndon's Mason Brewer (Wiscassett, Maine) were equally tough on the mound for the opposing batters. Brewer set down the first 11 Colby-Sawyer hitters, which included seven strikeouts. Andy Lapple broke up the no-hit bid in the fourth.

Keith surrendered a single to the game's second hitter, but he was erased on a double play. He faced the minimum over the first four innings to keep the Chargers in the game. A leadoff double by Dylan Newton (St. Albans, Vt.) in the top of the fifth gave Lyndon their first scoring chance. Keith retired the next three batters on groundouts to get out of the jam.

Colby-Sawyer then had a scoring chance in the bottom half of the fifth when Vinny Monahan reached on a bunt single and then stole second. Brewer set the next three Chargers down, including two strikeouts to retire the side.

After each team went three up and three down in the seventh, the game went to extra innings.

Lyndon's Michael Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) hit a single up the middle with one out in the top of the eighth, but was then picked off for the third out of the inning.

Colby-Sawyer Kyle Greenwood reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second when Alex Fredette earned a walk. Sean Gavin then hit a dribbler to shortstop who tried to make a play to second, but Fredette beat the throw. While the play was unfolding at second, Greenwood came all the way around to score the game-winning run.

Keith earned his fourth win of the season after tossing eight shutout innings. He gave up just three hits and struck out seven. Brewer took the loss and allowed three hits. He struck out 11 Colby-Sawyer batters.

In the nightcap, Singster and Lyndon Zachary Hatin (Colchester, Vt.) put up matching zero's in the first six innings.

Lyndon had a couple of chances to score first after loading the bases in fourth and sixth innings with less than two outs. Each time Singster was able to record a strikeout and a groundout to get out of both jams.

Colby-Sawyer broke through in the bottom of the sixth after a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt. With two down, Andy Lapple hit a grounder to shortstop that went right through the defender and into the outfield. Cody Pelletier came around to score the eventual game-winning run.

Singster breezed through the top of the seventh with three straight outs to secure the victory. Lyndon outhit the Chargers 5-4, but Singster was able to strand eight Hornets on the base paths.

Singster earned his second win of the season with a complete game shutout. He allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one. Hatin gave up four hits, no earned runs, and did not walk anyone.

Cameron Knight made several diving plays in right field to help keep Lyndon off the scoreboard throughout each game.
