Castleton sweeps Lyndon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Aaron Zrenda's run-scoring single in the top of the seventh plated the winning run as Castleton rallied to a 5-4 victory over Lyndon in Game 1 of a double header held at Skip Pound Field.

The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on an RBI single off the bat of Shawn Kennedy and a two-double double by Ryan Zielinski. Castleton maintain the advantage until the bottom of the sixth when the Hornets responded with four runs of their own.

Two walks, a single by Korey Marsh (Essex, Vt.) and a double by Jake Ainsworth (fairfax, Vt.) fueled the uprising which was capped by a costly three-run error by Spartan rightfielder Matt Eisenhuth. By the time the dust settled Lyndon had taken a 4-3 lead heading into the final inning of play.

Jack Lancelin spark the Castleton rally with a leadoff single in the seventh and came home with the tying run a few pitches later on a fielder's choice by Zak Mayo. After a balk sent Mayo to second, Zrenda drove him home with the eventual game-winning run.

Zrenda had two hits to leads the Spartans and Zielinski chipped in two RBIs for the winners. Ainsworth had two hits and an RBI for Lyndon in the loss.

Seth Harrington went the distance to get the win, allowing four earned runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking four. Hornet left-hander Isaac Earle (Verono, Vt.) also tossed a complete game allowing five earned runs on nine hits while fanning four and walking none.

In Game 2, Tyler Erickson spun a two-hitter – striking out 12 along the way – to propel Castleton to a 3-0 win over Lyndon and a sweep of the twin bill.

Cameron Curler's RBI single in the fourth staked the Spartans to a 2-0 lead before Zielinski capped the scoring on the day with a run-scoring double in the seventh. Castleton scored its first run of the day in the third on an error by Hornet third baseman Patrick Hilton (Lyndonville, Vt.).

Kennedy had two hits to lead the Spartans while Michael Cartularo (Lyndonville, Vt.) and Shayne Kirby (Fairfax, Vt.) had one each for Lyndon.

Erickson faced six batters above the minimum and did not issue a walk in the contest. Shane O'Donnell-Leach (Groton, Vt.) went seven strong innings for the Hornets, allowing two earned runs on six hits while fanning three and walking one.
