Box Score LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — The Lyndon men's soccer team
collected its third 1-0 victory in its last four games when slipped
past Maine Maritime Academy. The win upped the Hornets overall
record to 7-1-1 and 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.
In a physical, up-and-down game, the contest remained scoreless
until the 87:42 mark when Lyndon was awarded a throw-in to the
right of the Mariners' goal. Emmitt Simpson (Barton, Vt.)
tossed the ball toward the goal and it somehow managed to find its
way to the doorstep of the net through a maze of several
players.
As the throw-in approached the goal mouth, Hornets striker Kyle Mecham (Wilbraham, Mass.) beat Maritime goalkeeper Randy Bartlett
to the ball, and tapped it home for the game-winner with 2:18 left
to play. The Mariners made a desperate run at the Lyndon net in the
waning seconds of the game, but could not score the equalizing
goal.
Hornet goalkeeper Jason Gray (East thetford, Vt.) made four
saves to earn the shutout and Bartlett combined with starting
goalie Jeff Butland to make one save in the contest. Butland left
the game in the first half due to an injury. Maine Maritime out
shot Lyndon in the game by a margin of 12-10.
