Box Score 2 CASTLETON, Vt. – Ken Cook struck out 11
batters over seven innings pitched in game one and the Spartans
plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh in game two to
complete the doubleheader sweep of Lyndon State. Castleton won Game
1 by a score of 5- and took Game 2 by a count of 7-6.
5-1 and 7-6, on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, Cook dominated the Hornets on the hill tossing a
perfect game through three innings striking out six batters during
that span. He let up just two hits, one earned run and no walks
throwing 51 strikes on 73 pitches. Matt Eisenhuth went 3-for-3
offensively with two runs and an RBI. Ted Mills finished game one
at the plate going 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI's.
Lyndon State lone run of the game came in the fourth inning as
second baseman Stetson Hicks (Whitefield, N.H.)
broke up Cook's perfect game bid with an infield single to
the left side. After a sacrifice bunt by Corey Lescault (Bristol, R.I.), Ben Clark
(Brattleboro, Vt.) smoked an opposite field single to left field to
even the score at 1-1. The Spartans answered back with three runs
in the bottom half to take a 4-1 lead.
Hornets' starter Shane Fleury
(Plainfield, Vt.) suffered the loss pitching four-and-one-thirds
innings allowing eight hits, five runs (four earned), no walks and
one strikeout. Isaac Earle (Brattleboro, Vt.)
wrapped the last inning-and-two-thirds yielding no hits, no runs,
no walks and two strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Spartans found themselves down 6-5 in the
bottom of the seventh with one out, before Ryan Zielinski singled
up the middle to start Castleton's two-run rally. Zielinski
followed with a steal of second and advanced to third on a throwing
error. Garrett Bissonnette, in a pinch hitting role, walked and
Zielinski scored on a passed ball to tie the score at 6-6.
Manley struck out in the ensuing at-bat, but pinch runner D.J.
Detweiler stole second base. On the second pitch of an intentional
walk situation to Eisenhuth, Detweiler swiped third base to put the
winning run 90-feet away. After the intentional walk to Eisenhuth,
pinch hitter Peter Wagner walked to load the bases. With a 1-0
count, Kurt Hewes ripped a single through the left side for the
walkoff win.
Tyler Erickson earned the win in relief pitching two-thirds of
an inning. Patrick Riley pitched one-and-one-thirds innings
yielding one hit, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts.
Castleton starter Billy Sisko was served the no-decision throwing
five innings, giving up nine hits, five runs (three earned), three
walks and seven strikeouts.
Hornets' starter Jeremy Schichtle (Wells
River, Vt.) pitched six innings allowing seven hits, five runs
(three earned), two walks and five strikeouts. Jake Ainsworth (Fairfax, Vt.) suffered the loss on two-thirds
innings pitched giving up two hits, two runs (one earned), three
walks and one strikeout.
Lyndon State used a five-run fifth inning to tie the score at
5-5 spearheaded by Patrick Hilton's
(Lyndonville, Vt.) two-run single down the right field line. The
Hornets took the lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from
Shayne Kirby (Fairfax, Vt.) after Trucott walked
and Hilton smacked a double to right field to put runners at second
and third. Trucott finished game two at the plate going 2-for-3
with two runs scored and an RBI, Hilton and Kirby went 3-for-3 with
Hilton scoring once and both batters knocking in two runs.
