Gonyea named NAC Player of the Week, McIntyre named to Honor Roll

Waterville, ME - Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball player Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) has been named the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending December 7th, as announced by the conference office on Monday.  Hornet guard Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) was named to the NAC's weekly Honor Roll.  Gonyea is the second Hornet to earn Player of the Week honors this season.  McIntyre was the Co-Player of the week for the week ending November 9th.

Gonyea had a stellar week as VTSU Lyndon went 2-1 in three North Atlantic Conference games.  He began with a 29-point effort against Lesley.  25 of his 29 came in the second half as Lyndon rallied from a 32-point deficit to get within four points, only to come up just short.  He then led the Hornets to a pair of road wins over the weekend, starting with a 33-point outburst at SUNY Cobleskill on Friday.  He again came up big in the second half, as 27 of his 33 came after intermission.  Gonyea closed out his week with 21 points in a win at SUNY Delhi.  For the third game in a row he did the majority of his damage in the second half, tallying 12 points after the break.  Gonyea was at his best in all three contests when the games were in the balance, as he averaged 21.3 points in the second half for the week, converting 19 of 29 shots from the floor (65.5%), 3 of 6 from behind the arc, and 23 of 29 (79.3%) from the free throw line.

McIntyre also had an outstanding week, averaging 21 points and six rebounds per game.  He opened the week with 21 points, six rebounds, and four steals as the Hornets nearly completed the comeback against Lesley.  Then in the two rod wins he tallied 30 points, seven rebounds, and three steals at SUNY Cobleskill, then followed that up with a 22 point, five rebound outing at SUNY Delhi.  For the week Wesley was 27/49 (55.1%) from the floor, 7/12 (58.3%) from three, and 13/17 (76.5%) from the free throw line.

McIntyre currently leads the NAC in scoring, averaging 26.4 points per game through seven contests.  That figure places him fourth nationally among all NCAA Division III players.  Gonyea, the reigning NAC scoring champion, is currently averaging 22.6 points per game, trailing only McIntyre in the conference.

Gonyea, McIntyre, and the Hornets will return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Vermont State University Johnson for a 6:00 pm NAC contest.
