Cobleskill, NY - Vermont State University Lyndon broke the 100-point mark and rode a balanced, high-tempo attack to a 100–91 win over the State University of New York at Cobleskill on Friday night at Iorio Gymnasium. The Hornets improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in North Atlantic Conference play, while the Fighting Tigers dropped to 1-7 and 0-3 in the conference.
Lyndon recovered from an early 11-point deficit to take a 46-43 lead into halftime. Neither team was able to gain control through much of the second half. With the game tied at 86-86 and three minutes remaining, Lyndon was able to go on a quick 8-0 run. The Hornets then held off the Tigers to come away wiht the win.
Graduate guard Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) powered the offense with 33 points, with 27 of them coming after halftime. Sophomore guard Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) added 30 points, attacking the rim and sparking several key second-half runs. Sophomore forward Ty Bates (Hartwwell, GA) tallied eight points and sparked the Lyndon defense with four steals and several deflections.
Cobleskill stayed close thanks to a balanced effort that included 16 points from Rowan Morel and 14 from Marquay Tanksley, but the Tigers were unable to match Lyndon's pace or scoring depth down the stretch.
The Hornets continue their New York road trip at the State University of New York at Delhi on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
