Hornet men's tennis drops a pair at Thomas

Waterville, ME - thomas College swept a pair of men's tennis matches against Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Saturday afternoon, winning both by 9-0 margins.  The first match was a North Atlantic Conference contest, while the second was a non-conference affair.  Thomas improved to 6-4 on the season and 3-0 in NAC play while Lyndon fell to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Match 1 - Thomas 9, NVU-Lyndon 0

Thomas jumped in front by sweeping the three doubles matches.  Nicolas Arenas and Jose Alfonso started things with an 8-1 win over David Gratton (Newport, VT) and Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) at first doubles.  Liam Gould and Gabe McPhail also won, 8-1, over Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) and Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) at second doubles.  third doubles was the most competitive of the three flights, with the Thomas duo of Caleb Diagneault and Kegan Rodrigue downing Lyndon's James Salvas (Morrisville, VT) and Matthew Condon (East Bridgewater, MA), 8-3.

Arenas made quick work of Blais with a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles, then Alfonso's 6-4, 6-1 win over Peer at number two clinched the win for Thomas.  With things decided, the Terriers closed out the sweep as McPhail defeated Webster, 6-3, 6-2, in the third flight, Gould defeated Gratton, 6-2, 6-4, at four, Rodrigue defeated Condon, 6-0, 6-2, at five, and Diagneault defeated Joseph Patrick Osborn (Hanover, NH), 6-2, 6-1, at six.

Match #2 - Thomas 9, NVU-Lyndon 0

Lyndon shuffled the lineup for the non-conference match, but the Hornets didn't fare any better.  The Terriers again swept three doubles contests, with Arenas and Alfonso defeating Peer and Webster, 8-2 at one, Gould and McPhail downing Blais and Gratton, 8-1, at two, and Daigneault and Danny Kezerle topping Osborn and Condon, 8-3 at three.

The Terriers also swept the six singles matchups, with Arenas winning over Peer, 6-1, 6-0 at one, Alfonso defeating Webster, 6-2, 6-0 at two, McPhail defeating Blais, 6-1, 6-0 at three, Gould besting Gratton, 6-1, 6-2 at four, Nick Magiera topping Salvas, 6-1, 6-2, at six, and Rodrigue picking up an 8-1 pro set win over Condon at five.

The Hornets will return to the courts on Sunday afternoon when they host the State University of New York at Delhi at the Topnotch Tennis Academy in Stowe, VT.  The North Atlantic conference matchup will start at 1:00 pm.
