Hornet men's tennis closes the season with two wins over VTSU Johnson on Senior Day

Newport, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's tennis team finished their 2026 season on a five match winning streak, capped with a doubleheader sweep of Vermont State University Johnson on Saturday.  The first match was an Empire 8 Conference contest and the second one was a non-conference affair.  Lyndon finished with a 6-5 overall record and a 2-3 mark in E8 play.  Johnson finished winless in 13 matches, including five E8 contests.

Match #1 - VTSU Lyndon 7, VTSU Johnson 0

The Badgers defaulted the third flight and the Hornets completed the sweep for a point with 6-0 wins in both first and second doubles.  Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) and Joe Buchanan (McCordsville, IN) downed Adiance Cheromiah and Jack Senecal at number one and David Gratton (Newport, VT) and Bryan Nazario (Little Elm, TX) defeated Mohammed Semega and Caitlyn Morey at two.

Lyndon continued to dominate in singles play.  The Badgers defaulted sixth singles and Buchanan picked up a in over Morey by retirement at number four.  McIntyre was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Cheromiah in the first flight.  Gratton won a hard fought match with Senecal, 6-4, 6-2, at two and Nazario was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Semega at three.  In the most competitive match of the day, Parker Pierce (Woodstock, VT) rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Johnson's Charlie Guyette.

Match #2 - VTSU Lyndon 6, VTSU Johnson 1

The Badgers again defaulted third doubles.  With a split of the top two flights, the Hornets took the doubles point.  Nazario and Gratton again won the second flight, besting Guyette and Semega, 6-1.  However Senecal and Cheromiah were able to get past McIntyre and Zahi Rashid (St. Johnsbury, VT) 6-3 in the first flight.

With Johnson defaulting number six, the Hornets won four of the other five flights to take the match.  Naario had little trouble defeating Guyette, winning 6-0, 6-0 at four.  McIntyre again dominated Cheromiah, winning 6-0, 6-1 at one.  Gratton cruised past Semega, 6-2, 6-0 at three.  Johnson got their lone win of the day in second singles, where Senecal was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Pierce.  With the match decided, Addie Jensen (Coventry, VT) won a pro set, 8-4, over Morey.

Prior to Saturday's matches, Lyndon seniors Gratton and Nazario were honored for their contributions to Hornet tennis.  They were joined on the court by family members, friends, and their teammates.  Gratton is expected to graduate in May and Nazario is expected to graduate in December.
