Hornet men's tennis closes out their season by sweeping NVU-Johnson

Stowe, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis team closed out the 2022 season by sweeping a pair of matches against Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Wednesday afternoon.  The Hornets started off by picking up a 9-0 victory over the Badgers in their North Atlantic Conference matchup, then followed with another 9-0 win in a non-conference contest.  The Hornets finish 5-9 on the season and 2-4 in NAC play, while the Badgers fall to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in conference

Match 1 - NVU-Lyndon 9, NVU-Johnson 0

The Hornets took all three doubles matches without losing a game to quickly take control of the NAC match.  Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) picked up the win at first doubles, downing Johnson's Wyatt Moberg and Silas Lowenthal.  Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) and Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) defeated Anthony Barbieri and Thomas Nguyen at second doubles.  And at three, Bobby Saba (Mansfield, MA) and Matthew Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) defeated Adrian Popowycz and Samuel Stephens.

In singles play, Wickstrom defeated Moberg, 6-2, 6-0 in the first flight.  Falkenburg was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Lowenthal at second singles, and Blais defeated Wesley Swanson, 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.  With the match decided, the remaining flights were played in eight game pro set format.  Peer defeated Barbieri, 8-0, at four, Saba defeatd Austin White, 8-1, at five, and Condon defeated Romelle Watts, 8-0, at six.

Match 2 - NVU-Lyndon 9, NVU-Johnson 0

The Hornets again got off to a fast start in the non-conference match.  Falkenburg and Peer played a perfect match at two, shutting out Popowycz and Stephens without losing a point.  Wickstrom and Blais also downed Moberg and Lowenthal for a second time without losing a game.  In third doubles, Saba and Condon were 8-1 winners over Watts and Swanson.

Moving to singles, Falkenburg swept Lowenthall, 6-0, 6-0 in the second flight.  Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Popowycz at five.  With the match decided, the remaining singles flights were played in pro set format.  Wickstrom and Blais were 8-0 winners over Moberg and Swanson at first and third singles respectively.  Peer and Saba picked up 8-1 wins over Barbieri and Nguyen at four and six.

Seniors Wickstrom, Falkenburg, and Saba close out their Lyndon careers.  Wickstrom and Falkenburg were both key members of the Hornets' first and only NAC men's tennis championship in 2021.  Blais, Peer, Webster, and Condon are expected to form the nucleus of the 2023 team.
