Box Score 2 St. Albans, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's tennis team swept two matches from rival Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Saturday. Playing at the Collins Perley Sports & Fitness Center, the Hornets prevailed, 9-0, in a North Atlantic Conference matchup, then came away with another 9-0 win in a non-conference affair. Lyndon improves to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in NAC play, while Johnson remains winless in seven matches this season, including five conference contests.
Match 1 - NVU-Lyndon 9, NVU-Johnson 0
The shorthanded Badgers only had five available players do the Hornets garnered forfeit wins at third doubles and second singles. Lyndon extended their lead to 4-0 after sweeping first and second doubles, both by 8-0 scores. Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT) defeated Johnson's Wyatt Moberg and Anthony Barbieri at one, and Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, VT) and Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) downed Romelle Watts and Austin White at two.
The Hornets clinched the victory when Bobby Saba (Mansfield, MA) defeated Thomas Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0, at fifth singles. With the match decided, the other singles flights were played in eight game pro set format. Wickstrom, Falkenburg, and Blais were 8-0 winners over Moberg, Barbieri, and Watts at first, second, and third singles respectively. Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) was an 8-1 winner over White at fourth singles.
Match 2 - NVU-Lyndon 9, NVU-Johnson 0
The Hornets again started the match with a 2-0 lead due to the Badgers forfeiting third doubles and sixth singles. Wickstrom and Blais repeated their 8-0 win over Moberg and Barbieri at first singles. At second singles, Falkenburg teamed with Saba for an 8-0 win over Watts and White.
Matthew Condon (East Bridgewater, MA) clinched the match for the Hornets with his first collegiate win, a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Nguyen at fifth singles. Falkenburg defeated Barbieri, 6-0, 6-0, at second singles. Saba was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Watts at third singles. Webster downed White, 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles. With the match decided prior to the start of first singles, Wickstrom and Moberg played a pro set match, with Wickstrom prevailing, 8-3.
Saturday's matches were the final home contests for Hornet seniors Falkenburg, Saba, and Wickstrom. Prior to the start of play they were recognized and thanked for their contributions to the Hornet tennis program.
The Hornets will close out the season when they travel to NVU-Johnson for a return NAC match on Wednesday. Play is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
