Box Score Stowe, VT - Sunday's North Atlantic Conference men's tennis match between Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and SUNY Delhi turned out to be the most closely contested of the season. In a match that wasn't decided until the final singles match, the Broncos escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Hornets. The Broncos improve to 6-3 overall and remain unbeaten in NAC play at 4-0. The Hornets fall to 1-8 on the season and 0-4 in the NAC.
Delhi picked up the first point of the match when their first doubles team of Jarod Rackliffe and Christopher Balogh cruised to an 8-2 victory over the Lyndon duo of Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Jeffrey Blais (Newport, VT). The Hornets evened things when their third doubles team of Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) and Bobby Saba (Mansfield, MA) won a hard fought match over Delhi's Kyle Gonda and Daniel Distasio. Lyndon then took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play when their second doubles combination of Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) and Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) won a back and forth match over Tyler Kemble and Ryoto Yoshinaga, 9-8, with a come from behind 8-6 win in the tiebreaker.
Rackliffe evened the match at 2-2 when he made quick work of Wickstrom, 6-1, 6-0, at first singles. After Distasio picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Saba in the sixth flight and Gonda slipped bast Webster, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the fifth flight, the Broncos moved in front in the match, 4-2.
With Lyndon's back to the wall, Blais earned a solid 6-2, 6-3 win over Kemble at third singles. Falkenburg then outlasted Balogh, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 at second singles to even the match at 4-4 with one match remaining. In the pivotal fourth singles match, Yoshinaga ran away with a 6-0 win in the first set, then came from bhind to take the second set, 7-5, and clinch the victory for the Broncos.
The Hornets will host Norwich University in a non-conference match on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
