Box Score Stowe, VT - Castleton University squeaked by Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in a tightly contested non-conference men's tennis match on Tuesday evening. The Spartans won four of six singles matches to come away with a 5-4 victory, their first win in four matches this season. The Hornets fall to 1-3 on the campaign.
The Hornets jumped in front when the second doubles team of Quinlan Peer (Saranac Lake, NY) and Zach Falkenburg (Bridgeport, NY) defeated the Castleton duo of Connor Davis and Jason Lipscomb, 8-4. Castleton then evened things up after Phil Kluge and Dante Buttino rallied for an 8-6 win over the Hornets' Patrick Wickstrom (Lafayette, LA) and Jeffrey Blais (Newport, NY) in first doubles. Lyndon took a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles play after Bobby Saba (Mansfield, MA) and Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) won, 8-2, over Miguel Almirall and Rowan Kidder at third doubles.
Falkenburg extended the Lyndon lead to 3-1 following a 6-4, 7-5 win over Davis at second singles. Kluge then came from behind in both sets to defeat Wickstrom, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in their first singles matchup, and Lipscomb picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Blais at third singles to even the match at 3-3.
Peer put Lyndon back in front following a 6-4, 6-1 win over Buttino at fourth singles, but Jahwara Rennalls downed Saba, 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles, then Almirall edged Webster, 6-3, 6-4, at fifth singles to clinch the match for the Spartans.
The Hornets will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Norwich University for a 3:30 pm non-conference match.
