UMF rides fast start to win over Hornet women

Box Score

Lyndonville, VT - The University of Maine at Farmington scored the first nine points of Monday night's North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon.  The Beavers then maintained their lead throughout and went on to a 57-47 victory over the Hornets.  UMF improves to 9-7 on the season and 4-4 in conference play while Lyndon falls to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the NAC.

After McKenna Brodeur scored on the game's first possession, Page Brown ran off the next seven points to stake the Beavers to the early advantage.  UMF slowly extended their lead through the middle quarters, going in front by 19 following a Brodeur layup with 6:30 to go in the third quarter.

UMF took an 18-point advantage into the final quarter, but the Hornets rallied to close the gap.  When Nyah Garner (Birmingham, AL) converted a steal and layup, the Hornets were within 10 points at 51-41 with 4:20 remaining.  Brown knocked down a jumper to push the lead back to 12, but Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) answered for the Hornets.  After a defensive stop, Garner again scored at the basket and Lyndon was within eight with 1:22 to go.  That would be as close as it got, however, as UMF was able to stave off the Hornet rally and emerge with the win.

Brown led all scorers with 20 points and added nine rebounds.  Brodeur posted a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Bea Stafford came off the UMF bench to chip in 14 points.  Molly Folsom pulled down a game high 11 boards.

Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, NH) led the Hornets with 13 points and six assists.  Faith Poirier (Portsmouth, NH) was Lyndon's only other double figure scorer, as she finished with 10 points.

Both teams struggled from the floor.  The Beavers made only 22 of 64 attempts (34.4%), and only one of 18 (5.6%) from behind the three-point arc.  Meanwhile the Hornets only connected on 16 of their 68 shots (23.5%), including only four of 24 (16.7%) from distance.  UMF dominated the glass, outrebounding Lyndon 59-40.  The Hornets did force 22 Beaver turnovers while turning it over 16 times themselves.

Lyndon returns to action on Wednesday evening when SUNY Cobleskill comes to Stannard Gymnasium for a 7:30 pm NAC crossover contest.
